Appalachian State Mountaineers Football Seasons
The Appalachian State Mountaineers football team competes as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), representing Appalachian State University in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference. The team's current head coach is Shawn Clark, who was hired after the departure of Eliah Drinkwitz following the team's victory in the 2019 Sun Belt Championship game. The Mountaineers fielded their first team in 1928 under coach Graydon Eggers. From 1928 to 1969, Appalachian State participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and spent time playing in the North State Conference/Carolinas Conference, the Smoky Mountain Conference, and as an independent. Phillip Perry "Sparky" Woods (born December 20, 1953) is an American football coach. He is a senior adviser for football team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Woods served as the head football coach at Appalachian State University from 1984 to 1988, the University of South Carolina from 1989 to 1993, and the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), from 2008 to 2014. Playing career Woods attended Oneida High School, where he is in its Hall of Fame. He holds the record for the most interceptions in a season. Wofford College sponsors 18 sports for men's and women's programs, competing as the Terriers. The Terriers compete in the Southern Conference, and have been a part of the league since the 1997–98 academic year. James Andrew Brakefield (October 23, 1918 – October 14, 2002) was an American football and baseball coach. The All-America designation is an annual honor bestowed upon an amateur sports person from the United States who is considered to be one of the best amateurs in their sport. Individuals receiving this distinction are typically added to an All-America team for their sport. Some sports will have multiple All-America teams and will list the honorees as members of a first team, second team, or third team. Pierce Oliver "Kidd" Brewer (May 5, 1908 – November 22, 1991) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach and athletic director at Appalachian State Teachers College—now known as Appalachian State University—from 1935 to 1938. Brewer's 1937 football squad went unbeaten and unscored upon during the regular season, outscoring their opponents 206–0. Brewer was an All-American at Duke University before coaching at Appalachian.
