Apostolic Vicariate Of Jaffna
The Diocese of Jaffna ( la, Dioecesis Jaffnensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in northern Sri Lanka. Latin Catholicism in the diocese's territory date to the time of St. Francis Xavier. The current bishop is Justin Gnanapragasam. History The Apostolic Vicariate of Jaffna was created on 17 February 1845 from the Diocese of Ceylon. On 1 September 1886 it was promoted to a diocese. On 25 August 1893 parts of diocese were transferred to newly created Diocese of Trincomalee. On 19 December 1975 parts of diocese were transferred to newly created Apostolic Prefecture of Anuradhapura. On 24 January 1981 parts of diocese were transferred to newly created Diocese of Mannar. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Colombo ( la, Archidioecesis Columbensis in Taprobane) is a Latin Metropolitan Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, whose ecclesiastical province covers all Sri Lanka plus the Maldives (which are within the archbishopric). It depends on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The current archbishop of Colombo, appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on 16 June 2009, is Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. He is assisted in this role by the auxiliary bishops. The archdiocesan mother church and cathedral seat of its Metropolitan Archbishop is St. Lucia's Cathedral. Statue Of Our Lady Of Miracles, Jaffna Patao
The statue of ''Our Lady of Miracles'', Jaffna patão is a wooden statue, now preserved in the church of São Pedro, in Bainguinim, Goa, India. The historical origin of the devotion to our Lady of Miracles Jaffnapatão In 1614, Friar Francisco de S. Antonio who was the Rector of Our Lady of Victory, Jaffnapatao (Nossa Senhora da Vitória, Jafanapatão) wanted a statue for the church altar. The friar asked a local sculptor named Annacutti to carve a statue from a piece of wood he had brought with him from Cochin. The statue of the Virgin Mary, holding her infant son in her arms while being carved already become a miraculous statue. People went to Annacutti's house to pray before the statue and many reported to have been cured. Even those prayed holding the wood shavings got cured through the intercession of Virgin Mary. Right Reverend Emmanuel Thomas Savundaranayagam ( ta, இம்மானுவேல் தோமசு சௌந்தரநாயகம், si, තෝමස් සවුන්ද්රනායගම්; born 13 July 1938) is a Sri Lankan Tamil priest and former Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna. Early life and family Savundaranayagam was born on 13 July 1938 in Kayts on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. He was educated at St. Anthony's College, Kayts and St. Patrick's College, Jaffna. He then studied at St. Martin's Seminary, Jaffna and National Seminary, Ampitiya (1957–64). Savundaranayagam has a Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from the Pontifical Urbaniana University and a Diploma in Catechetics. Career Savundaranayagam was ordained as a priest in December 1963. Right Reverend Jacob Bastiampillai Deogupillai (9 April 1917 – 25 April 2003) was a Ceylon Tamil priest and Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna. Early life and family Deogupillai was born on 9 April 1917 in Karampon on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. He was educated at St Anthony's College, Kayts, and at St Patrick's College, Jaffna. He then studied at the Propaganda College. He later received a BA degree from the Ceylon University College and a Diploma of Education from the University of Ceylon. Career Deogupillai was ordained as a priest in Rome in December 1941. After returning to Ceylon he served as parish priest of Karaveddy. He taught for a while before becoming rector of St. Joseph's College, Anuradhapura. The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) is a missionary Congregation of Papal Right, religious congregation in the Catholic Church. It was founded on January 25, 1816, by Eugène de Mazenod, a France, French priest born in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France on August 1, 1782, who was to be recognized later as a Catholic saint.
