Apostolic Nunciature To Azerbaijan
The Apostolic Nunciature to Azerbaijan is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in Azerbaijan. It is headed by the Apostolic Nuncio, a member of the diplomatic service of the Holy See, who represents the interests of the Holy See to Church officials, the government, and civil society in Azerbaijan. It is a diplomatic post with the rank of ambassador. Azerbaijan and the Holy See established diplomatic relations on 23 May 1992. Jean-Paul Gobel
Jean-Paul Aimé Gobel (born 14 May 1943) is a French prelate of the Catholic Church who has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Biography Gobel was born on 14 May 1943 and ordained a priest for the Diocese of Annecy on 29 June 1969. He completed the program of study at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1970 and then entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. His early assignments were in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Mozambique, Nicaragua, and Burundi. Beginning in May 1989, Gobel was the first of several Holy See diplomats assigned to Hong Kong in order to study at close hand the Church in China and the longterm prospects for relations between China and the Holy See. Peter Stephan Zurbriggen
Peter Stephan Zurbriggen (27 August 1943 – 28 August 2022) was a Swiss archbishop of the Catholic Church, who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1993 until his retirement in 2018. He was Apostolic Nunzio to Austria from 2009 to 2018. Biography He was born and died in Brig, Switzerland. He was ordained a priest on 10 October 1969, entering the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1970. On 13 November 1993, he was named Apostolic Delegate to Mozambique, advancing to the post of Apostolic Nuncio in that country on 22 February 1996. Claudio Gugerotti (born 7 October 1955) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who was named prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches in November 2022. He previously worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, holding the position of nuncio in several eastern European countries between 2001 and 2020 and in Great Britain from 2020 to 2022. He joined the staff of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches in 1985 and was its undersecretary from 1997 to 2001. He has been an archbishop since 2001. Since the fifth century, long before the founding of the Vatican City State in 1929, papal envoys (now known as nuncios) have represented the Holy See to foreign potentates. Additionally, papal representatives known not as nuncios but as apostolic delegates ensure contact between the Holy See and the Catholic Church in countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the Holy See. At present, there is one residential apostolic delegate, for Jerusalem and Palestine, as well as non-residential delegates for four countries (Brunei, Laos, Mauritania, and Somalia) and for the territories and countries without diplomatic relations with the Holy See in three regions (the Arabian Peninsula, the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean).
