Apostolic Nunciature To Algeria
The Apostolic Nunciature to Algeria is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in Algeria. It is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio to Algeria and enjoys the rank of an ambassador. The office of the nunciature is located in Bologhine- Alger. The Vatican established the position of Delegate to Northern Africa on 27 February 1965; John Gordon held that post until 14 July 1967. Sante Portalupi succeeded him on 27 September 1967. The delegate's responsibilities were modified as the Holy See developed relationships with countries in the delegate's area of responsibility. Portalupi took on the title of Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Algeria on 6 March 1972. Antonio Sozzo (born 9 May 1942) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, including for twenty years as apostolic nuncio, before he retired in 2015. Biography Antonio Sozzo was born on 9 May 1942 in Paola in Calabria. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Verona on August 28, 1971. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 12 July 1976. He worked in Panama, Uruguay, Nigeria, Chile, Germany, Morocco, and Spain, and in the nunciature in Brussels from 1991 to 1993. The Catholic Church in Algeria is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Prior to independence, Algeria was home to a million Catholic settlers (10%). Some Moroccans of Berber (mostly Kabyle) or Arab descent converted to Christianity during the French colonialism. Since independence in 1962, the European Catholic population has decreased substantially, and many Catholics left to France or Spain. Prior to independence, the European Catholic settlers had historic legacy and powerful presence. Since the fifth century, long before the founding of the Vatican City State in 1929, papal envoys (now known as nuncios) have represented the Holy See to foreign potentates. Additionally, papal representatives known not as nuncios but as apostolic delegates ensure contact between the Holy See and the Catholic Church in countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the Holy See. Thomas Yeh Sheng-nan (; born 26 June 1941) is a Taiwanese prelate of the Roman Catholic Church and diplomat of the Holy See. Biography Thomas Yeh Sheng-nan was born on 26 June 1941, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and was ordained priest on 27 March 1971, for the Diocese of Tainan. He holds a laurea degree in philosophy. Augustine Kasujja (born 26 April 1946) is a Ugandan prelate of the Catholic Church who works in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He was the Apostolic Nuncio to Belgium from 2016 to 2021. He was the first black African to hold the title of apostolic nuncio. Edmond Farhat (20 May 1933 – 17 December 2016) was a Lebanese prelate of the Catholic Church who spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See Biography Farhat was born in Ain Kfaa, Lebanon, on 20 May 1933. On 28 March 1959, the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch Paul Peter Meouchi ordained him a priest. He earned degrees in theology, philosophy and canon law in Paris and Rome and a doctorate in theology.
