Aphrodite Of The Gardens
Aphrodite of the Gardens ( grc, Αφροδίτη εν Κήποις, ) is an epithet of the Greek goddess Aphrodite. The epithet describes her patronage over vegetation and garden fertility. According to Pausanias, there was a sanctuary of Aphrodite of the Gardens near the Acropolis of Athens, accessible through an underground passage. It was said to have held a cult statue of Aphrodite by Alcamenes and a herm of Aphrodite near the temple. It is unsure whether the statue of Aphrodite and the herm of Aphrodite were the same sculpture or two separate sculptures. The herm of Aphrodite may be linked to the later mythological character, Hermaphroditos. Alcamenes
Alcamenes ( grc, Ἀλκαμένης) was an ancient Greek sculptor of Lemnos and Athens, who flourished in the 2nd half of the 5th century BC. He was a younger contemporary of Phidias and noted for the delicacy and finish of his works, among which a Hephaestus and an Aphrodite of the Gardens were conspicuous. Aphroditus or Aphroditos ( grc-gre, Ἀφρόδιτος, , ) was a male Aphrodite originating from Amathus on the island of Cyprus and celebrated in Athens. Aphroditus was portrayed as having a female shape and clothing like Aphrodite's but also a phallus, and hence, a male name. This deity would have arrived in Athens from Cyprus in the 4th century BC.
