Thorn-tailed Rayadito
The thorn-tailed rayadito (''Aphrastura spinicauda'') is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae. It is found in temperate forests and subtropical dry shrubland south of 30°S. Some sources suggest it may formerly have occurred in the Falkland Islands. It remains the commonest and best-known native bird in temperate forests of Zona Austral and Zona Sur in Chile,Ridgely, Robert S. and Tudor, Guy; ''Field Guide to the Songbirds of South America: The Passerines''; pp. 285-286. often occurring at densities of well over one individual per hectare. Description The thorn-tailed rayadito is approximately in length including the tail, and an average adult weighs around , with males being around 10 percent heavier than females.Moreno, Juan, Merino, Santiago, Lobato, Elisa, Rodríguez-Gironés, Miguel A. and Vásquez Rodrigo A.; "Sexual dimorphism and parental roles in the thorn-tailed rayadito (Furnariidae)" in '' The Condor'' 109(2):312-320 (2007) The most distinctive feature of a ...

Masafuera Rayadito
The Masafuera rayadito (''Aphrastura masafuerae'') is a rare bird Endemism, endemic to Alejandro Selkirk Island (''Isla Más Afuera'', Outermost Island) in the Juan Fernández Islands. The species is a member of the ovenbird (family), ovenbird family (biology), family and only one of three species in the rayadito genus. The species' natural habitat is humid montane scrub, dominated by tree ferns (''Dicksonia externa'') and ferns (''Lophosoria quadripinnata'') between 800–1300 m above sea level (though they will descend lower during the austral winter). Masafuera rayaditos travel in pairs while feeding on arthropods; feeding occurs in the wood understory and occasionally on the ground in the plant litter, leaf-litter. Nesting occurs at high altitudes (above 1200 m), in small natural crevices in rocks. The Masafuera rayadito is a critically endangered species. Surveys of the species in the 1980s found between 500-1000 birds but by 1992 that had dropped to 200 and by 200 ...

Subantarctic Rayadito
The Subantarctic rayadito (''Aphrastura subantarctica'') is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae that is endemic to the Diego Ramírez Islands, an archipelago located in the southernmost extreme of Chile. Taxonomy Subantarctic rayadito individuals were formerly identified as belonging to the species ''Aphrastura spinicauda'' (thorn-tailed rayadito The thorn-tailed rayadito (''Aphrastura spinicauda'') is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae. However, the newly identified ''A. subantarctica'' has a larger body mass and shorter tails. In 2022, ''A. subantarctica'' was split off as a separate species from ''A. spinicauda'' by Ricardo Rozzi et al. (2022), on the basis of genetic, morphological, and behavioral evidence. Habitat While '' Aphrastura spinicauda'' lives in forested habitats, ''A. subantarctica'' lives in ...

Harry Church Oberholser
Harry Church Oberholser (June 25, 1870 – December 25, 1963) was an American ornithologist. Biography Harry Oberholser was born to Jacob and Lavera S. Oberholser on June 25, 1870, in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Columbia University, but did not graduate. Later Oberholser was awarded degrees (B.A., M.S., and PhD.) from the George Washington University. He married Mary Forrest Smith on June 30, 1914. From 1895 to 1941, he was employed by the United States Bureau of Biological Survey (later the United States Fish and Wildlife Service) as an ornithologist, biologist, and editor. During his career, he collected bird specimens while on trips with Vernon Bailey and Louis Agassiz Fuertes. In 1928, Oberholser helped organize thWinter Waterfowl Survey which continues to this day. In 1941, at the age of 70, he became curator of ornithology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Oberholser was the author of a number of books and articles. A complete manuscript of his work is avai ...

Bird
Birds are a group of warm-blooded vertebrates constituting the class Aves (), characterised by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a strong yet lightweight skeleton. Birds live worldwide and range in size from the bee hummingbird to the ostrich. There are about ten thousand living species, more than half of which are passerine, or "perching" birds. Birds have whose development varies according to species; the only known groups without wings are the extinct moa and elephant birds. Wings, which are modified forelimbs, gave birds the ability to fly, although further evolution has led to the loss of flight in some birds, including ratites, penguins, and diverse endemic island species. The digestive and respiratory systems of birds are also uniquely adapted for flight. Some bird species of aquatic environments, particularly seabirds and some waterbirds, have further evolved for swimming. B ...

Taxa Named By Harry C
In biology, a taxon (back-formation from ''taxonomy''; plural taxa) is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. Although neither is required, a taxon is usually known by a particular name and given a particular ranking, especially if and when it is accepted or becomes established. It is very common, however, for taxonomists to remain at odds over what belongs to a taxon and the criteria used for inclusion. If a taxon is given a formal scientific name, its use is then governed by one of the nomenclature codes specifying which scientific name is correct for a particular grouping. Initial attempts at classifying and ordering organisms (plants and animals) were set forth in Carl Linnaeus's system in ''Systema Naturae'', 10th edition (1758), as well as an unpublished work by Bernard and Antoine Laurent de Jussieu. The idea of a unit-based system of biological classification was first made widely available in 1805 in the intro ...
