Aphanizomenonaceae
The Aphanizomenonaceae are a family of cyanobacteria Cyanobacteria (), also known as Cyanophyta, are a phylum of gram-negative bacteria that obtain energy via photosynthesis. The name ''cyanobacteria'' refers to their color (), which similarly forms the basis of cyanobacteria's common name, blu ... containing mostly genera which produce aerotopes. Cyanobacteria from the family Aphanizomenonaceae may form blooms in lentic freshwater bodies which may be dangerous for humans. References Nostocales Cyanobacteria families {{cyanobacteria-stub ...

Nostocales
The Nostocales are an order of cyanobacteria containing most of its species. It includes filamentous forms, both simple or branched, and both those occurring as single strands or multiple strands within a sheath. Some members show a decrease in width from the base, and some have heterocysts Heterocysts or heterocytes are specialized nitrogen-fixing cells formed during nitrogen starvation by some filamentous cyanobacteria, such as ''Nostoc punctiforme'', ''Cylindrospermum stagnale'', and ''Anabaena sphaerica''. They fix nitrogen from .... References Bacteria orders {{cyanobacteria-stub ...

Anabaenopsis
''Anabaenopsis'' is a genus of filamentous, heterocystous cyanobacteria that reproduces by fragmentation and with akinetes. Anabaenopsis can produce microcystins, which are toxic to both humans and animals. The genus is primarily tropical and subtropical, with some species creating blooms in temperate regions during warmer seasons. ''Anabaenopsis'' contains bloom-formers among planktonic species. The type species In zoological nomenclature, a type species (''species typica'') is the species name with which the name of a genus or subgenus is considered to be permanently taxonomically associated, i.e., the species that contains the biological type specimen ... for the genus is '' Anabaenopsis elenkinii'' V.V.Miller, 1923. Aphanizomenon
''Aphanizomenon'' is a genus of cyanobacteria that inhabits freshwater lakes and can cause dense blooms. They are unicellular organisms that consolidate into linear (non-branching) chains called trichomes. Parallel trichomes can then further unite into aggregates called rafts. Since Aphanizomenon is a genus in the cyanobacteria phylum. Bacteria in the Cyanobacteria phylum are known for using photosynthesis to create energy and therefore use sunlight as their energy source. Aphanizomenon bacteria also play a big role in the Nitrogen cycle since they can perform nitrogen fixation. Studies on the species ''Aphanizomenon flos-aquae'' have shown that it can regulate buoyancy through light-induced changes in turgor pressure. It is also able to move by means of gliding, though the specific mechanism by which this is possible is not yet known. Ecology Overcoming phosphate limitation ''Aphanizomenon'' may become dominant in a water body partially due to their ability to induce phosphate- ...

Cuspidothrix
''Cuspidothrix'' is a genus of cyanobacteria belonging to the family Nostocaceae. The genus has almost cosmopolitan distribution In biogeography, cosmopolitan distribution is the term for the range of a taxon that extends across all or most of the world in appropriate habitats. Such a taxon, usually a species, is said to exhibit cosmopolitanism or cosmopolitism. The ext .... Cylindrospermopsis
''Cylindrospermopsis'' is a planktonic genus of filamentous cyanobacteria known for its blooms in eutrophic waters. The type species is the tropical ''Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii'' (Woloszynska) Seenayya & Subbaraju. The cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin Cylindrospermopsin (abbreviated to CYN, or CYL) is a cyanotoxin produced by a variety of freshwater cyanobacteria. Nodularia
''Nodularia'' is a genus of filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. They occur mainly in brackish or salinic waters, such as the hypersaline Makgadikgadi Pans, the Peel-Harvey Estuary in Western Australia or the Baltic Sea. ''Nodularia'' cells occasionally form heavy algal blooms. Some strains produce a cyanotoxin called nodularin R, which is harmful to humans. The type species for the genus is ''Nodularia spumigena'' Mertens ex Bornet & Flahault, 1886. Morphology ''Nodularia'' may form solitary filaments or groups of filaments. They reproduce by the formation of hormogonia, filament breakage, and by akinetes An akinete is an enveloped, thick-walled, non-motile, dormant cell formed by filamentous, heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria under the order Nostocales and Stigonematales. Akinetes are resistant to cold and desiccation. They also accumulate and stor ... .Martin Dworkin and Stanley Falkow, 2006 See also Kruger, T., Oelmuller, R., and Luckas, B. (200 ...
