Aon Chase
The Denman Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt racing, National Hunt steeplechase (horse racing), steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to Horse racing, horses aged five years or older. It is run at Newbury Racecourse, Newbury over a distance of about 2 miles and 7½ furlongs (2 miles 7 furlongs and 86 yards, or 4,706 metres), and during its running there are eighteen fences to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year in February. The event was originally named the Aon Chase, after its first sponsors Aon (company), Aon Group Ltd, and it was first run in 2000. It was promoted to Listed status in 2002, and to Grade 2 level in 2003. The planned running in 2009 was abandoned at Newbury because of February 2009 Great Britain and Ireland snowfall, snow, and so the race was switched to an alternative venue, Kempton Park Racecourse, Kempton Park. In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. In the UK the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
