Aoife De Búrca
Aoife de Búrca (3 October 1885 1 December 1974), one of the few nurses stationed in the Hibernian Bank and the General Post Office, Dublin during the Easter Rising, de Búrca was one of those who treated James Connolly before his arrest. Biography She was born Evaline Mary Burke on 3 October 1885 to Mary Kelly and Henry J. Burke. Her father Henry had been born in Albany, New York to Irish parents. He moved back to Ireland where he married, and settled in Carbury, County Kildare, Ireland. The couple had 5 children. de Búrca attended school in the Dominican Convent on Eccles street in Dublin. She went on to study nursing. She came from a republican family. Her younger brother Frank Burke was one of the Irish volunteers and was stationed in the GPO. When de Búrca heard of the insurrection she immediately went into the city centre to find out what was needed. GPO Nursing Contingent
The GPO nursing contingent was a group of twelve women, including members of ''Cumann na mBan'' - the republican women's organisation for Irish independence - who remained in the besieged G.P.O. building during the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin and removed the wounded to hospital. Many women of ''Cumann na nGaedheal'', the Irish Citizen Army and ''Cumann na mBan'' provided support to republicans before and during the Rising. On Friday 28 April 1916, pinned down by the British Army and with a fire encroaching, Pádraig Pearse said that those not qualified in first aid should leave to avoid expected worse fighting. At 18:30, Joseph Plunkett gave the order to prepare the wounded republicans for removal. Rathfarnham () is a Southside suburb of Dublin, Ireland. It is south of Terenure, east of Templeogue, and is in the postal districts of Dublin 14 and 16. It is within the administrative areas of both Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council and South Dublin County Council. Located within the historical baronies of Rathdown and Uppercross, Rathfarnham village originally developed around a fortification overlooking a ford on the River Dodder. Drumcondra () is a residential area and inner suburb on the Northside of Dublin, Ireland. It is administered by Dublin City Council. The River Tolka and the Royal Canal flow through the area. History The village of Drumcondra was the central area of the civil parish of Clonturk, and the two names were used equally for the religious and civil parishes, but the modern suburban district of Drumcondra also encompasses the old Parish of St. Mary. Clonturk had been an alternative name for Drumcondra and the wider area for some time. Jervis Street Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Shráid Jervis) was a hospital in Jervis Street in Dublin, Ireland. The site of the hospital became the Jervis Shopping Centre. History The hospital was founded by six Dublin surgeons, George Duany, Patrick Kelly, Nathaniel Handson, John Dowdall, Francis Donany and Peter Brenan, at their own expense, as the Charitable Infirmary in Cook Street, Dublin, in 1718. The hospital moved to larger premises on King's Inn's Quay in 1728. In 1786, when the new Four Courts were about to be erected on the quays, an agreement was reached with the Earl of Charlemont to allow the hospital to move into his former mansion at 14 Jervis Street, which happened in October 1796. General Post Office, Dublin
The General Post Office (GPO; ga, Ard-Oifig an Phoist) is the headquarters of An Post — the Irish Post Office. It is the principal post office of Dublin — the capital city of Ireland — and is situated in the centre of O'Connell Street, the city's main thoroughfare. It is one of Ireland's most famous buildings, not least because it served as the headquarters of the leaders of the Easter Rising against British rule in Ireland.
