Antony Noghès
Antony Noghès (13 September 1890 in Monaco – 2 August 1978 in Monte Carlo, Monaco) was the founder of the Monaco Grand Prix. He also helped create the Rallye Monte-Carlo in 1911. He suggested the international adoption of the checkered flag to end races. Since 1979, the last turn of the Monaco circuit (the former "Gazometer turn") just before the finish line, has been named "Virage Antony Noghès" after him. As "Agent general de la Regie des tabacs" he was the Director of the Public administration responsible for the management of the monopoly of procurement, manufacturing, and selling of tobacco in the Principality. The Monaco Grand Prix (french: Grand Prix de Monaco) is a Formula One motor racing event held annually on the Circuit de Monaco, in late May or early June. The Monte Carlo Rally or Rallye Monte-Carlo (officially ''Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo'') is a rallying event organised each year by the Automobile Club de Monaco. Circuit de Monaco is a street circuit laid out on the city streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine around the harbour of the Principality of Monaco. Alexandre-Athenase Noghès (15 June 1916 – 16 February 1999) was an international tennis champion, married Marinette Bastel, having one son Lionel (racing driver), best known as the first husband of Princess Antoinette of Monaco, whom he married as his second wife on 4 December 1951. Noghès' grandfather Alexandre was the founder of the Monaco Automobile Club and former general treasurer of Monaco's state finances. 1929 Monaco Grand Prix
The 1929 Monaco Grand Prix was the first Grand Prix to be run in the Principality. It was set up by wealthy cigarette manufacturer, Antony Noghès, who had set up the Automobile Club de Monaco with some of his friends. This offer of a Grand Prix was supported by Prince Louis II, and the Monégasque driver of that time, Louis Chiron.
