Anton Hekking
Johannes Francis Anton Hekking (7 September 1856 – 18 November 1935) was a Netherlands-born cellist and teacher. Education Anton Hekking was born in The Hague on 7 September 1856, to a musical family that also produced other notable cellists, including André Hekking (1866–1925) and Gérard Hekking (1879–1942), both of whom made their careers chiefly in France. Anton was taught first by his father, Gerard Hekking, who was himself a musician, and then, starting at age 12, by Joseph Giese (1821–1903) at the Hague Conservatory. At the age of 16 he became the principal cellist of the Utrecht orchestra. A few years later he moved to Paris to study with cellists Pierre Chevillard and Léon Jacquard at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the ''premier prix'' for cello in 1878. Walter Damrosch
Walter Johannes Damrosch (January 30, 1862December 22, 1950) was a German-born American conductor and composer. He was the director of the New York Symphony Orchestra and conducted the world premiere performances of various works, including George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F, ''An American in Paris'', and Jean Sibelius' ''Tapiola''. Damrosch was also instrumental in the founding of Carnegie Hall. He also conducted the first performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the composer himself as soloist. Clarence Adler
Clarence Adler (1886-1969) was an American musician from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a pianist, and a soloist for many leading orchestras in the United States and abroad. He was the private music instructor for composer Aaron Copland. Adler was born in Cincinnati to German Jewish immigrants. He won a scholarship to the College of Music of Cincinnati (later part of UC's CCM) at age 12. After he turned 18 he went to Europe for further study and found success and acclaim as the pianist in a famous trio. He returned to Cincinnati and continued his ensemble endeavors. In 1913 he moved to New York City and taught at the Institute of Musical Art (later part of Juilliard) and gave over 60 private lessons a week, influencing the lives of many musicians. Artur Schnabel
Artur Schnabel (17 April 1882 – 15 August 1951) was an Austrian-American classical pianist, composer and pedagogue. Schnabel was known for his intellectual seriousness as a musician, avoiding pure technical bravura. Among the 20th century's most respected and important pianists, his playing displayed marked vitality, profundity and spirituality in the Austro-German classics, particularly the works of Beethoven and Schubert. Music critic Harold C. Schonberg described Schnabel as "the man who invented Beethoven". Between 1932 and 1935, he produced the first recording of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas. In 2018, the Library of Congress selected this recording to be placed in the National Recording Registry for its historical significance. Gustav Hollaender
Gustav Hollaender (15 February 1855 in Leobschütz – 4 December 1915 in Berlin) was a German violinist, conductor, composer and teacher. He was the son of a doctor in Leobschütz (Upper Silesia) also eldest brother of the famous writer Felix Hollaender and the well-known operetta composer Viktor Hollaender. His musical talents were discovered at an early age. He attended the Leipzig Conservatory of Music at the age of twelve, where he counted Ferdinand David in particular among his teachers. Later, the bright student came to Berlin to the Royal Music Academy and completed his artistic training there under the masters Joseph Joachim (violin) and Friedrich Kiel (composition). Brodsky Quartet (Adolph Brodsky Manchester)
The Brodsky Quartet was the second string quartet established and led by violinist Adolph Brodsky. History It was established in 1895 in Manchester, after Brodsky left New York and came to the English city to teach at the Royal Manchester College of Music and direct the Hallé Orchestra. Brodsky played first violin, Rawdon Briggs played second violin, Simon Speelman played the viola, and Carl Fuchs played the cello. After the First World War the membership changed several times, with Brodsky the only original member. Brodsky and Fuchs, who both admired Edward Elgar, met him in February 1900, when Hans Richter introduced them following a performance of the ''Enigma Variations'' Richter conducted in Manchester. The Brodsky Quartet was a string quartet led by Adolph Brodsky. It was established on 1884, while Brodsky was professor at the Leipzig Conservatoire. The founding members, aside from Brodsky (1st violin) were Ottokar Nováček (2nd violin), Hans Sitt (viola) and Leopold Grützmacher (violoncello).Kohut 1900, pp. 84–85 In 1885, Hans Becker replaced Nováček (2nd violin) and Julius Klengel replaced Grützmacher. Adolph Davidovich Brodsky (russian: Адольф Давидович Бродский, ''Adolf Davidovič Brodskij''; – 22 January 1929) was a Russian violinist. He enjoyed a long and illustrious career as a performer and teacher, starting early in Vienna, going on to Moscow, Leipzig, and New York City and finally Manchester. Franz Kneisel
Franz Kneisel (born January 26, 1865, Bucharest - died March 26, 1926, New York) was a violinist and music teacher. He completed early musical training at the Bucharest Conservatory and moved to Vienna in 1879, where he studied under Jakob Grün. He was concertmaster for the Bilse Orchestra in Berlin during 1884-1885 and then moved to the United States, where he was first violinist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1885-1903). He founded the Kneisel Quartet in 1886.
