Anton Geesink
Antonius Johannes Geesink (6 April 1934 – 27 August 2010) was a Dutch people, Dutch List of judoka#Highest grades, 10th dan judoka. He was the first non-Japanese judoka to win gold at the World Judo Championship, a feat he accomplished in 1961 World Judo Championships, 1961 and 1965 World Judo Championships, 1965. He was also an Olympic Champion, having Judo at the 1964 Summer Olympics, won gold at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Japan, and won a record 21 European Judo Championships during his career. Judo career Geesink took up judo aged 14 and by 17 started competing internationally, winning a silver medal in 1951. The following year, he won his first European title. Through to 1967, twenty more European titles followed. At the 1956 World Championships, Geesink was eliminated in the semi-finals against Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu. This is a list of highly notable judoka (judo practitioners). Founder * Jigorō Kanō (Japan, 1860–1938) founded judo, and established the Kōdōkan in 1882. Judo was the first Japanese martial art to gain widespread international recognition, and the first to become an official Olympic sport. Kanō was also a pioneer of international sports. Accomplishments included being the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). His official honours and decorations included the First Order of Merit and Grand Order of the Rising Sun and the Third Imperial Degree. He was inducted to the IJF Hall of Fame on 14 May 1999. The Championships were held in two separate categories: amateur (seven events) and professional (six events). The Championships were held in three separate categories: junior (three events), amateur (five events), and professional (four events). The amateur contests were subdivided into four individual competitions, and a separate team competition, which was held in East Berlin on 18 May. The Soviet and other Socialist judokas were allowed to compete professionally but on a strictly non-profit basis. The 1962 European Judo Championships were the 11th edition of the European Judo Championships, and were held in Essen, West Germany on 12 and 13 May 1962. The Championships were held in two separate categories: amateur (nine events) and professional (four events). The amateur contests were subdivided into weight classes (four events), experience classes (four events), and a separate team competition (one event). The professional contests were subdivided only into weight classes. It was the first edition of the European Judo Championships to host judokas from the Socialist countries (Eastern European and Soviet), though they did not participate in the professional contests as professional sports were banned in those countries.
