Antoine Polette
Antoine Polette (August 24, 1807 – January 6, 1887) was a Quebec lawyer, judge and political figure. He was born Antoine Paulet in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Lower Canada in 1807 and studied at the Petit Séminaire de Québec. He articled in law at Quebec City, was admitted to the bar in 1828 and set up practice in Trois-Rivières. Polette served as warden for the county from 1842 to 1846 and then was mayor of Trois-Rivières from 1846 to 1853. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Trois-Rivières as a Reformer in an 1848 by-election held after the preceding general election was not completed in that riding. He was reelected in 1851 and 1854 and retired from politics in 1857. Although Polette had originally supported the government of Francis Hincks and Augustin-Norbert Morin, he participated in the defeat of this government in 1854 because of the unresolved issue of seigneurial tenure. John McDougall (Quebec Politician)
John McDougall (July 25, 1805 – February 25, 1870) was a businessman and political figure in Canada East. He was born in Coldstream, Scotland in 1805 and settled at Trois-Rivières around 1833. He owned a general store there and served as mayor from 1855 to 1857. He was president of the Three Rivers Gas Company. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Drummond in 1851; he ran unsuccessfully in Trois-Rivières in 1858. McDougall served as a director for the North Shore Railway. In 1862 and 1863, he purchased ironworks at Saint-Maurice and L'Islet. He died in Vieilles-Forges near Trois-Rivières in 1870. His sons became partners in his various businesses. His son William was a member of the Canadian House of Commons. Château Clique
The Château Clique, or Clique du Château, was a group of wealthy families in Lower Canada in the early 19th century. They were the Lower Canadian equivalent of the Family Compact in Upper Canada. They were also known on the electoral scene as the Parti bureaucrate (Bureaucratic Party, also known as the British Party or the Tory Party). Like the Family Compact, the Château Clique gained most of its influence after the War of 1812. Most of its families were British merchants, but some were French Canadian seigneurs who felt that their own interests were best served by an affiliation with this group. Some of the most prominent members were brewer John Molson and James McGill, the founder of McGill University. Generally, they wanted the French Canadian majority of Lower Canada to assimilate to English culture. William McDonell Dawson
William McDonell Dawson (1822 – August 9, 1890) was a Quebec businessman and political figure, and a Scottish Roman Catholic. He was born in Redhaven, Banffshire, Scotland in 1822 and came to Nepean Township near Bytown around 1836. He served as Crown Lands agent at Ottawa and was superintendent of the woods and forests branch in the Crown Lands department from 1852 to 1857. Dawson was founder and present of the North-West Transit Company. In 1858, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Trois-Rivières; he was defeated there but elected for the County of Ottawa in the 1861 general election. During his first term in office, he travelled to London in an attempt to secure financing for a transcontinental railroad. Reform Party (pre-Confederation)
The Reform movement in Upper Canada was a political movement in British North America in the mid-19th century. It started as a rudimentary grouping of loose coalitions that formed around contentious issues. Support was gained in Parliament through petitions meant to sway MPs. However, ''organized'' Reform activity emerged in the 1830s when Reformers, like Robert Randal, Jesse Ketchum, Peter Perry, Marshall Spring Bidwell, and Dr. William Warren Baldwin, began to emulate the organizational forms of the British Reform Movement and organized Political Unions under the leadership of William Lyon Mackenzie. The British Political Unions had successfully petitioned for the Great Reform Act of 1832 that eliminated much political corruption in the English Parliamentary system. Joseph-Édouard Turcotte
Joseph-Édouard Turcotte (October 10, 1808 – December 20, 1864) was a lawyer and political figure in Canada East. He was born in Gentilly, Lower Canada in 1808. He studied at the Séminaire de Nicolet. In 1831, he lost his right arm in an accident. Deciding not to pursue a future in the priesthood, he studied law with Elzéar Bédard and was called to the bar in 1836. He practised law at Quebec City and then Trois-Rivières. He became a supporter of Louis-Joseph Papineau and supported the parti patriote. In 1841, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Saint-Maurice; he opposed the union of the Canadas. He was forced to resign because he had accepted two government posts, but was reelected in an 1842 by-election; he was defeated in 1844. He was named solicitor general for Canada East in 1847 but was forced to resign in 1848 after two unsuccessful attempts to gain a seat in the assembly.
