Antiques Roadshow
''Antiques Roadshow'' is a British television programme broadcast by the BBC in which antiques appraisers travel to various regions of the United Kingdom (and occasionally in other countries) to appraise antiques brought in by local people (generally speaking). It has been running since 1979, based on a 1977 documentary programme. The series has spawned many international versions throughout Europe, North America and other countries with the same TV format. The program is hosted by Fiona Bruce and it is in its 45th series. History The programme began as a BBC documentary that aired in 1977, about a London auction house doing a tour of the West Country in England. The pilot roadshow was recorded in Hereford on 17 May 1977 and presented by contributor Bruce Parker, a presenter of the news/current affairs programme '' Nationwide'', and antiques expert Arthur Negus, who had previously worked on a similarly themed show, called ''Going for a Song''. Hugh Scully
Michael Hugh Scully (5 March 1943 – 8 October 2015) was an English journalist, radio and television presenter. He was the host and longest-serving presenter of the BBC programme ''Antiques Roadshow'' from 1981 to 2000. Education and early life Born in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, Scully spent much of his childhood in Malta and Egypt, where his father was stationed with the Royal Air Force. He was educated at Prior Park College, a boarding school in Bath, Somerset, at the age of thirteen and after leaving, worked for a period with the piano company Steinway & Sons. For a short time he worked as a record producer at Saga Records in London. Career Scully auditioned successfully as a temporary newsreader on BBC radio, and made his debut regular radio broadcast reporting from Southampton in 1963. Angel Of The North
The ''Angel of the North'' is a contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Completed in 1998, it is believed to be the largest sculpture of an angel in the world and is viewed by an estimated 33 million people every year due to its proximity to the A1 and A167 roads and the East Coast Main Line. The design of the Angel, like many of Gormley's works, is based on Gormley's own body. The COR-TEN weathering steel material gives the sculpture its distinctive rusty, oxidised colour. It stands tall with a wingspan of which is larger than a Boeing 757 aircraft. The vertical ribs on the body and wings of the Angel act as an external skeleton which direct oncoming wind to the sculpture's foundations, allowing it to withstand wind speeds of over . Maquette
A ''maquette'' (French word for scale model, sometimes referred to by the Italian names ''plastico'' or ''modello'') is a scale model or rough draft of an unfinished sculpture. An equivalent term is ''bozzetto'', from the Italian word for "sketch". David Battie
David Battie FRSA (born 22 October 1942) is a British retired expert on ceramics, with a particular specialism in Japanese and Chinese artefacts. Career After attending art school, where he studied graphic design, Battie worked for ''Reader's Digest'' magazine for three years. In 1965 he joined the auction house Sotheby's. There he worked in the Departments of Ceramics and Oriental Works of Art and was appointed a Director in 1976. He retired from Sotheby's in 1999. After leaving Sotheby's he became editor of ''Masterpiece'' magazine and has written many books on pottery and porcelain. He also undertakes public speaking. He is probably best known for his many appearances on the long-running BBC television show ''Antiques Roadshow'', in which he appeared for 43 years, from the first series in 1977 until his retirement in 2020. ''Jim'll Fix It'' is a British television series broadcast by the BBC between May 1975 and July 1994 and was devised and presented by Jimmy Savile and produced by Roger Ordish. The show encouraged children to write in a letter to Savile with a "wish" that would come true at the end of each episode, upon which the child would be granted a medal. Notable celebrity guests appearing on the show include Muhammad Ali, Tom Baker, and Peter Cushing. ''Jim'll Fix It'' was briefly revived in 2007 as ''Jim'll Fix It Strikes Again'' and later had a television special air in 2011.
