Antioch University Midwest
The now-closed Antioch University Midwest (AUM) was a private institution of higher education serving adult students in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Previously the school was named "Antioch University McGregor" after the management professor and theorist Douglas McGregor, who served as the President of Antioch College from 1948 to 1954. On June 12, 2010, the university was officially renamed "Antioch University Midwest." AUM was part of the on-going Antioch University system that includes Antioch University New England in Keene, New Hampshire; Antioch University Seattle in Seattle, Washington; Antioch University Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California; and, Antioch University Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California. The original Antioch College, out of which the University system grew, is no longer part of the system, and has been reborn as an independent liberal arts college in Yellow Springs. Antioch College
Antioch College is a private liberal arts college in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Founded in 1850 by the Christian Connection, the college began operating in 1852 as a non-sectarian institution; politician and education reformer Horace Mann was its first president. The college has been politically liberal and reformist since its inception. It was the fourth college in the country to admit African-American students on an equal basis with whites. It has had a tumultuous financial and corporative history, closing repeatedly, for years at a time, until new funding was assembled. Antioch College began opening new campuses in 1964, when it purchased the Putney School of Education in Vermont. Eventually it opened over 38 different campuses, and in 1978 it changed its name to Antioch University. Arthur Ernest Morgan
Arthur Ernest Morgan (June 20, 1878 – November 16, 1975) was a civil engineer, U.S. administrator, and educator. He was the design engineer for the Miami Conservancy District flood control system and oversaw construction. He served as the president of Antioch College between 1920 and 1936. He was also the first chairman of Tennessee Valley Authority from 1933 until 1938 in which he used the concepts proven in his earlier work with the Miami Conservancy District. Early life Arthur E. Morgan was born near Cincinnati, Ohio but his family soon moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota. After graduating from high school, he spent the next several years doing outdoors work in Colorado. During this time he learned that there was a dearth of practical understanding of hydraulic engineering. Rebecca Mann Pennell, later Rebecca Mann Dean (1821-1890Dorr, Laurence J., 'Botanical Libraries and Herbaria in North America. 4. She was one of the ten founding professors of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she taught physical geography, drawing, natural history, civil history, and didactics. Horace Mann
Horace Mann (May 4, 1796August 2, 1859) was an American educational reformer, slavery abolitionist and Whig politician known for his commitment to promoting public education. In 1848, after public service as Secretary of the Massachusetts State Board of Education, Mann was elected to the United States House of Representatives (1848–1853).
