Antigone (1961 Film)
''Antigone'' ( el, Aντιγόνη, ''Antigone'') is a 1961 Greek film adaptation of the Ancient Greek tragedy ''Antigone'' by Sophocles. It stars Irene Papas in the title role and was directed by Yorgos Javellas. The film follows the story of the play closely, but ends differently – instead of Creon retiring back to the palace as in the play, the film ends with Creon relinquishing his kingship and exiling himself out of Thebes. Plot After Oedipus realises he married his mother Jocasta and stepped down as king of Thebes, his two sons Eteocles and Polynices kill each other in the struggle for the succession. Creon, Jocasta's brother, ascends the throne and give the order that the body of Polynices should remain unburied, since he assaulted Thebes to dethrone his older brother. Oedipus' daughter Antigone, after trying unsuccessfully to involve her sister Ismene in her scheme, defies the prohibition and buries her brother. George Tzavellas
George Tzavellas, also rendered Giorgos Tzavellas, Yiorgos Tzavellas, or Yorgos Javellas ( el, Γιώργος Τζαβέλλας, 1916, Athens – October 18, 1976), was a Greek film director, screenwriter, and playwright. His filmmaking was particularly influential, with critic Georges Sadoul considering him "one of the three major postwar Greek directors" (along with Michael Cacoyannis and Nikos Koundouros). Tzavellas wrote at least 26 plays, in addition to writing the scripts for all of his films. Among his notable films are '' Marinos Kontaras'' (1948), the drama ''O methystakas'' (1950), and ''Antigone'' (1961), a cinematic adaptation of the Sophocles tragedy. His adaptation of ''Antigone'' reimagined it in the language of realist cinema, omitting stylized elements of Greek stageplay such as the chorus, and attempting to convey the same information via setting and dialogue. In Greek mythology, Tiresias (; grc, Τειρεσίας, Teiresías) was a blind prophet of Apollo in Thebes, famous for clairvoyance and for being transformed into a woman for seven years. Tzavalas Karousos (Greek: Τζαβαλάς Καρούσος; 8 September 1904 – 3 January 1969) was a Greek actor. Career He was born in Lefkada and first acted in the theatre participating in the Veakis- Nezer (Nesser) theatrical company.
