Anthony Wingfield
Sir Anthony Wingfield (died 15 August 1552) KG, MP, of Letheringham, Suffolk, was an English soldier, politician, courtier and member of parliament. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk from 1551 to 1552, and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household in the reign of Edward VI.D. Richardson, ed. K.G. Late in the 12th century they granted the tithes of Letheringham to the Prior and convent of St Peter and St Paul, Ipswich, who founded a cell of canons regular at Letheringham. The manor belonged in c.1307 to Sir Thomas Bovile (who died in that year). Orford (UK Parliament Constituency)
Orford was a constituency of the House of Commons. Consisting of the town of Orford in Suffolk, it elected two Members of Parliament (MP) by the block vote version of the first past the post system of election until it was disenfranchised in 1832. History Orford was first represented in the Parliament of England in 1298, but did not regularly send members until 1529. The right of election was vested in the Mayor, eight portmen, twelve "capital burgesses" and the freemen of the borough. In the early days of its representation, Orford had been a prosperous port and its freemen were numerous, but by the 18th century the number of freemen was deliberately kept low to facilitate controlling the elections, and the town had become a pocket borough where most of the qualified voters consisted of the owner's family and retainers. Anthony Wingfield (MP For Ripon)
Anthony Wingfield (1550?–1615?), one of a number of figures from the same family of his period, was an English scholar and Member of Parliament, known as reader in Greek to Queen Elizabeth I. Life Born probably in or soon after 1550, was the third son of Richard Wingfield of Wantisden, Suffolk, by his wife Mary, younger sister of Bess of Hardwick; Anthony Wingfield was his grandfather, and John Wingfield his brother. He matriculated as a pensioner of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1569, entered as a student of Gray's Inn in 1572, and was elected scholar of Trinity in 1573. He graduated B.A. in 1573–4, was elected fellow of his college in 1576, and commenced M.A. in 1577. Possibly through the influence of his uncle Anthony Wingfield (died 1593), usher to Queen Elizabeth, he was appointed reader in Greek to the Queen.
