Anthony Whelan
Anthony Gerard Whelan (born 23 November 1959) is an Irish former soccer player who played during the 1970s and 1980s. He made his League of Ireland debut for Bohemians on 9 September 1979 and made 25 league appearances (4 goals) and two appearances for Bohs in European competition before transferring to Manchester United in August 1980 for £30,000. After making just one appearance for Manchester United as a substitute for Kevin Moran, he moved to America. Anto then returned home to sign for Shamrock Rovers in 1983 and won the League in his first season at the club. After a spell at Cork City, he briefly signed back with the Rovers in 1986, where he played once in the European Cup. He made a total of 44 appearances for the Hoops. He then moved on to Bray Wanderers. He signed for Shelbourne in 1988, and won the League in 1992 and the 1993 FAI Cup. The Football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup), known as the Extra.ie FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City from Northern Ireland). Dublin City Cup
The Dublin City Cup is a defunct Irish football tournament which was played for by all League of Ireland sides (and not just those from Dublin city as the name suggests). It ran from 1933 and ran uninterrupted until 1973. In the 1975–76 season it was revived and played for by sides who did not reach the League of Ireland Cup quarter-finals. In 1983–84 it was revived again but only eight teams were invited to play, the six Dublin sides ( Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, St Patrick's Athletic, UCD and Home Farm) along with Drogheda United and Dundalk. It was played in a variety of formats; from complete round robin series to straight knock out tournaments. From the 1951–52 season it was played as a knockout tournament. The Leinster Senior Cup is an association football cup competition organized by the Leinster Football Association. It is currently contested by LFA affiliated League of Ireland clubs, Leinster Senior League Senior Division clubs and invited teams from the various LFA affiliated junior leagues. Before the introduction of the FAI Cup, it was considered the major cup competition for clubs in what is now the Republic of Ireland.
