Anthony Shorten (born 12 June 1969) is a former Australian Liberal National politician and a former Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He currently is a community advocate for the Logan region. In October 2023 he became a candidate for Logan City Council Division 7. Electoral District Of Algester
The electoral district of Algester is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in south-west Brisbane. It includes the suburbs of Algester, Parkinson, Hillcrest, Boronia Heights, Forestdale, Larapinta, Heathwood, Forest Lake, Doolandella and Pallara, as well as the Greenbank Military Range. It borders the electoral districts of Sunnybank, Stretton, Logan, Lockyer, Bundamba and Inala. The Algester electoral district was created at the 1999 redistribution from the former electoral district of Archerfield, and was contested for the first time at the 2001 election. It had been a safe seat for the Labor Party since its inception, as had Archerfield, but it was won by Anthony Shorten of the Liberal National Party at the 2012 election. Karen Struthers (born 19 February 1963) is an Australian politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1998 to 2012. Early life and career Before she was elected Struthers was an Assistant Director of the Queensland Council of Social Service. Leeanne Margaret Enoch is an Australian politician currently serving as the Minister for Communities and Housing and Minister for the Arts and Digital Economy of Queensland. She has also served as the Labor Party member for Algester in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2015. The Liberal National Party of Queensland (LNP) is a major political party in Queensland, Australia. It was formed in 2008 by a merger of the Queensland divisions of the Liberal Party and the National Party. At a federal level and in most other states, the two parties remain distinct and operate as a Coalition. The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. 2012 Queensland State Election
The 2012 Queensland state election was held on 24 March 2012 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The Labor Party (ALP), led by Premier Anna Bligh, was defeated by the opposition Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Campbell Newman. It is only the sixth time that Queenslanders have ousted a sitting government since 1915. The ALP was attempting to win a ninth consecutive election victory, having won every general election since 1989, despite being out of office between 1996 and 1998. Katter's Australian Party contested its first election. Before the election, it held two seats whose members had been elected as LNP candidates. Labor suffered one of the worst defeats of a state government since Federation, and the worst defeat of a sitting government in Queensland history. It is principally funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and is administered by a government-appointed board.
