Anthony Deku
Anthony K. Deku (13 June 1923 – 29 May 2015) was a politician and a member of the Council of State of Ghana. He was a former senior police officer in Ghana. Career Anthony Deku was a Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Criminals Investigations Department prior to the coup d'état of 24 February 1966 which led to the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah. He was later promoted Commissioner of Police in the same department. Politics Deku was one of four police officers who were on the National Liberation Council. The others were J.W.K. Harlley, the Vice Chairman, B. A. Yakubu, Deputy Commissioner of Police and J.E.O. Nunoo, Commissioner of Police (Administration). The Head of the government was Lt. Gen. Ankrah. Deku is alleged to have been involved in the planning of the coup with Emmanuel Kotoka and J. W. K. Harlley . In 2009, he became a member of the Council of State. National Liberation Council
The National Liberation Council (NLC) led the Ghanaian government from 24 February 1966 to 1 October 1969. The body emerged from a ''coup d'état'' against the Nkrumah government carried out jointly by the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces with collaboration from the Ghana Civil Service. The plotters were well connected with the governments of Britain (under PM Harold Wilson) and the United States (then under Lyndon B. Johnson), who some believe approved of the coup because of Nkrumah's pro-communist foreign policy. John Willie Kofi Harlley
John Willie Kofi Harlley (9 May 1919 – c. 1980s) was a Ghanaian police officer who was Vice Chairman of the National Liberation Council government and the first Inspector General of Police in Ghana from 1966 to 1969. He was a member of the three-man presidential commission which carried out presidential functions during the 1969 democratic transitional process in Ghana and in the first year of the Second Republic. Early years and education He was born at Akagla in the Volta Region which was then British Togoland under British jurisdiction following the World War I. He attended Presbyterian Schools at Boso and Akropong. He completed his elementary school education at Anloga Presbyterian School in 1936 and later enrolled into the Accra Academy where he had his secondary education from 1936 to 1939. Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka Born (26 September 1926 – 17 April 1967) was a Ghanaian military officer who was a member of the ruling National Liberation Council which came to power in Ghana in a military coup d'état on 24 February 1966. This overthrew the government of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of the republic. Early life and education Emmanuel Kotoka was born at Alakple, a village in the Keta district of the Volta Region of the Gold Coast (British colony). He completed his basic education at the Alakple Roman Catholic School and later attended the Anloga Senior School in 1941. He started training as a goldsmith but switched to a career in the military. Kwame Nkrumah
Kwame Nkrumah (born 21 September 190927 April 1972) was a Ghanaian politician, political theorist, and revolutionary. He was the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, having led the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957. An influential advocate of Pan-Africanism, Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity and winner of the Lenin Peace Prize from the Soviet Union in 1962. After twelve years abroad pursuing higher education, developing his political philosophy, and organizing with other diasporic pan-Africanists, Nkrumah returned to the Gold Coast to begin his political career as an advocate of national independence. Joseph Arthur Ankrah Born (18 August 1915 – 25 November 1992) was a Ghanaian army general who was the head of state of Ghana from 1966 to 1969 in the position of Chairman of the National Liberation Council. Before becoming head of state, Ankrah served as the first commander of the Ghana Army. He was Ghana's first military head of state.
