Anthony Aristar
Anthony M. Aristar (born 1948 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a linguist, the founder of the LINGUIST List, an important linguistic resource on the web, and a professor emeritus of linguistics at Eastern Michigan University. Studies Aristar received his Bachelor of Arts, BA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Melbourne in Australia (1977), his Master of Arts, MA in Semitic Languages from the University of Chicago (1980), and his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984 (Dissertation: ''On the Syntactic Incorporation of Linguistic Units''). Academic career Aristar was co-director of the Institute for Language and Information Technology at Eastern Michigan University until 2013, when he retired. Helen Aristar-Dry is an American linguist who currently serves as the series editor for SpringerBriefs in Linguistics. Most notably, from 1991 to 2013 she co-directed The LINGUIST List with Anthony Aristar. She has served as principal investigator or co-Principal Investigator on over $5,000,000 worth of research grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She retired as Professor of English Language and Literature from Eastern Michigan University in 2013. ISO 639-3:2007, ''Codes for the representation of names of languages – Part 3: Alpha-3 code for comprehensive coverage of languages'', is an international standard for language codes in the ISO 639 series. It defines three-letter codes for identifying languages. The standard was published by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on 1 February 2007. ISO 639-3 extends the ISO 639-2 alpha-3 codes with an aim to cover all known natural languages. OLAC, the Open Language Archives Community, is an initiative to create a unified means of searching online databases of language resources for linguistic research. The information about resources is stored in XML format for easy searching. OLAC was founded in 2000, and is hosted at the Linguistic Data Consortium webserver at the University of Pennsylvania. OLAC advises on best practices in language archiving, and works to promote interoperation between language archives.
