Anopheles Culicifacies
''Anopheles culicifacies'' is a mosquito species complex and one of the major vectors of malaria on the Indian subcontinent. It consists of five sibling species, provisionally designated as species A, B, C, D, and E. It prefers to rest indoors in cattle sheds, where it feeds on cattle. The control of ''A. culicifacies'' has become difficult due to development of insecticide resistance against all commonly used insecticides, including new-generation insecticides such as synthetic pyrethroids. George Michael James Giles (1853 - 1916) was an English surgeon and entomologist who specialised in mosquitoes. He wrote ''A report of an investigation into the causes of the diseases known in Assam as KaÌ_la-AzaÌ_r and Beri-Beri'' (1890) and ''A handbook of the gnats or mosquitoes giving the anatomy and life history of the Culicidae, together with descriptions of all species notices up to the present date'' (1902). Giles described several new species of mosquitoes.
