Annie Buller
Annie Buller (9 December 1895 – 19 January 1973), also known as Annie Buller-Guralnick, was a union organizer as well as co-founder of the Communist Party of Canada (CPC) and manager of many CPC publications. Background Annie S. Buller was born on December 9, 1895, in Ukraine to a Jewish family with three brothers. Her father was a carpenter. She emigrated to Montreal with her parents in the early 1900s. She became politically active in socialist politics during World War I and followed her friend Becky Buhay (1896–1953) to study Marxist thought at the Rand School of Social Science in New York. Spadina (electoral District)
Spadina was a Canadian electoral district that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1935 to 1988. It covered a portion of the western-central Toronto, Ontario. Its name comes from the Spadina Avenue, which runs through the heart of the riding. It was formed in 1933 from portions of Toronto Northeast, Toronto Northwest, Toronto West Centre, and Toronto South. Its boundaries changed repeatedly over the years, when it created it stretched far north to the edge of the city boundaries. As this northern portion of became more populated it was split off into other ridings. Its eastern and western boundaries were more consistent, with it stretching from John Street in the east to Bathurst Street in the west. Labor-Progressive Party
The Labor-Progressive Party (french: Parti ouvrier-progressiste) was the legal front of the Communist Party of Canada from 1943 to 1959. Origins and initial success In the 1940 federal election, the Communist Party led a popular front in several constituencies in Saskatchewan and Alberta under the name Unity, United Progressive or United Reform and elected two MPs, one of whom, Dorise Nielsen, was secretly a member of the Communist Party. After the Communist Party of Canada was banned in 1940, under the wartime '' Defence of Canada Regulations'', it established the Labor-Progressive Party (LPP) as a front organization in 1943 after the release of Communist Party leaders from internment. Dominion Communist–Labor Total War Committee
The Dominion Communist–Labor Total War Committee was a front organization of the then-banned Communist Party of Canada. The Committee originated as the "Tim Buck Plebiscite Committees" which were organized by the party in 1942 to campaign for a "yes" vote in the 1942 referendum on conscription (see Conscription Crisis of 1944). The Communist Party in Canada was under the control of Tim Buck (1891-1973), who was loyal to the Kremlin. Buck came to prominence as a supporter of Joseph Stalin, and became General Secretary of the Communist Party of Canada in 1929 after the old party leadership had been purged for supporting Leon Trotsky and others had been removed for supporting Nikolai Bukharin. Buck remained General Secretary of the Canadian party until 1962, and was an unquestioning supporter of the Soviet line throughout his tenure. The ''Defence of Canada Regulations'' were a set of emergency measures implemented under the ''War Measures Act'' on 3 September 1939, a week before Canada's entry into World War II. The extreme security measures permitted by the regulations included the waiving of ''habeas corpus'' and the right to trial, internment, bans on certain political and cultural groups, restrictions of free speech including the banning of certain publications, and the confiscation of property. Section 21 of the Regulations allowed the Minister of Justice to detain without charge anyone who might act "in any manner prejudicial to the public safety or the safety of the state." The ''War Measures Act'' (french: Loi sur les mesures de guerre; 5 George V, Chap. 2) was a statute of the Parliament of Canada that provided for the declaration of war, invasion, or insurrection, and the types of emergency measures that could thereby be taken.
