Annemarie Grewel
Annemarie Grewel (13 June 1935 – 27 February 1998) was a Dutch senator, educator, and columnist. She was an openly lesbian politician. Grewel was usually the chairperson of Labour Party congresses. In 1982, she became a columnist for ''De Groene Amsterdammer''. In 1986, she was elected to the municipal council of Amsterdam. In 1995, she was elected to the Dutch Senate. Biography Grewel was born on 13 June 1935 in Amsterdam. She would describe her a family as elitist, bohemian Jews. During World War II, the family went into hiding. Annemarie, her parents and her brother survived the war. After the war, the family adopted an orphaned girl who had survived Bergen-Belsen. Grewel studied pedagogy at the University of Amsterdam, and in 1963 she was appointed scientific assistant at the University. She would remain at the university until 1987. Senate (Netherlands)
The Senate ( or simply ' , literally "First Chamber of the States General", or sometimes ' ) is the upper house of the States General, the legislature of the Netherlands. Its 75 members are elected on lists by the members of the twelve States-Provincial and four electoral colleges for the Senate every four years, within three months of the provincial elections. All provinces and colleges have different electoral weight depending on their population. Members of the Senate tend to be veteran or part-time politicians at the national level, often having other roles. The Order of Orange-Nassau ( nl, Orde van Oranje-Nassau, links=no) is a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry founded on 4 April 1892 by the queen regent, Emma of the Netherlands. The order is a chivalric order open to "everyone who has performed acts of special merits for society.” These are people who deserve appreciation and recognition from society for the special way in which they have carried out their activities. Titles, prefixes, or post-nominals are not used in the Netherlands – the only exception being the Military William Order. Holocaust survivors are people who survived the Holocaust, defined as the persecution and attempted annihilation of the Jews by Nazi Germany and Axis powers, its allies before and during World War II in Europe and North Africa. The history of the Jews in the Netherlands began largely in the 16th century when they began to settle in Amsterdam and other cities. It has continued to the present. During the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany in May 1940, the Jewish community was severely persecuted. The area now known as the Netherlands was once part of the Spanish Empire but in 1581, the Northern Dutch provinces declared independence. A principal motive was the wish to practice Protestant Christianity, then forbidden under Spanish rule. Religious tolerance was effectively an important constitutional element of the newly independent state. This inevitably attracted the attention of Jews who were religiously oppressed in different parts of the world. In pursuit of religious freedoms, many Jews migrated to the Netherlands where they flourished.
