Anne Panther
Anne Panther (born 18 June 1982) is a German FIBA basketball official. In 2016 she became the first woman referee to officiate in the EuroLeague and the only one until the addition of Greek referee Vasiliki Tsaroucha in 2019. Career She spent eight years refereeing lower category games. At 23 she was appointed for an important tournament in Germany, for young referees. Afterwards, she started refereeing senior games. She spent two years at 5th division until promoted to National Division B. In 2009 she refereed her first First Division match, though she did not become a member of the German First Division referee group until 2011. She got her FIBA license in 2012. She took part in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Among the games she officiated were the women semifinal Spain vs. Serbia and the women bronze medal game France vs. Serbia. In basketball, an official (usually called a referee) enforces the rules and maintains order in the game. The title of official also applies to the scorers and timekeepers, as well as other personnel that have an active task in maintaining the game. Basketball is regarded as among the most difficult sports to officiate due to the speed of play, complexity of rules, the case-specific interpretations of rules, and the instantaneous decision required. Basketball at the 2016 Summer Olympics was the nineteenth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was held from 6 August to 21 August 2016. The preliminary and knockout round matches for men were played inside the Carioca Arena 1 in Olympic Park which seated up to 16,000 spectators. The matches for women were played at the Youth Arena. This marked the first time that the men's and women's Olympic tournaments were played in multiple/separate venues. The host country Brazil failed to make it to the quarterfinals of both the men's and women's tournaments, after being eliminated from the group stage. The 2019 EuroLeague Final Four was the concluding EuroLeague Final Four tournament of the 2018–19 EuroLeague season, the 62nd season of Europe's premier club basketball tournament, and the 19th season since it was first organised by Euroleague Basketball. The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) (English language: ''Federal Basketball League''), for sponsorship reasons named easyCredit BBL, is the highest level league of professional club basketball in Germany. The league comprises 18 teams. A BBL season is split into a league stage and a playoff stage. At the end of the league stage, the top eight teams qualify for the playoff stage, and the teams positioned in the 17th and 18th places are relegated to a lower-tier league. The playoffs are played in a "Best of five" format. The winning team of the final round are crowned the German Champions of that season.
