Anne Abayasekara
Annette Aurelia Abayasekara (1925 - 4 January, 2015) was a Sri Lankan journalist. She is considered the country's first female staff journalist, having started her career in 1947. Biography Abayasekara was educated at Ladies College, Colombo. When she was 17, she had an interview at Lake House, the head office of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. As it was wartime and newsprint paper was rationed, all newspapers had suspended their women's sections and she was offered a clerical position until such time as the women's pages were reinstated. She started work at Lake House in 1943; in 1947, the women's sections were re-opened and an Indian expatriate, Leela Shukla, was appointed editor. Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL), also known as Lake House. It publishes three daily, three weekend, five weekly, two monthly and three annual publications in Sinhala, English and Tamil. The ''Daily News'' is an English-language newspaper in Sri Lanka. It is now published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a government-owned corporation. The newspaper commenced publishing on 3 January 1918. D. R. Wijewardena was its founder. The present-day newspaper is written as a broadsheet, with photographs printed both in color and black and white. Weekday printings include the main section, containing news on national affairs, international affairs, business, political analysis, sports, editorials and opinions. Every Thursday issue a free supplement in a tabloid paper called "Wisdom". In addition, the ''Daily News'' also provides ''The Sri Lanka Gazette'' as a supplement on every Friday. ''Sunday Observer'' is a weekly English-language newspaper in Sri Lanka, published on Sundays. The ''Sunday Observer'' and its sister newspapers the '' Daily News'', ''Dinamina'', ''Silumina'' and ''Thinakaran'' are published by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a government-owned corporation. The paper, which was established in the present-day format in 1928, has roots that date back to 1834 when Sri Lanka was under the British rule. ''The Times of Ceylon'' was an English language daily newspaper in Sri Lanka published by Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL). It was founded in 1846 as the ''Ceylon Times'' and was published from Colombo. It ceased publication in 1985. History The ''Ceylon Times'' started on 11 July 1846 using the printing press of the defunct '' The Ceylon Herald''. The newspaper was established to oppose ''The Observer'' and promote the mercantile interests of British colonials. Initially it was published on Tuesdays and Fridays. In 1858 the paper's owners Wilson, Ritchie & Co. sold it to John Capper, a former sub-editor of '' The Globe''. Capper sold the paper to Alexander Allardyce in 1874 and returned to Britain.
