Anna Dybo
Anna Vladimirovna Dybo (russian: Анна Владимировна Дыбо, born June 4, 1959) is a Russian linguist, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and co-author (with Sergei Starostin) of the '' Etymological Dictionary of the Altaic Languages'' (2003), which encompasses some 3,000 Proto-Altaic stems. Etymological Dictionary Of The Altaic Languages
The ''Etymological Dictionary of the Altaic Languages'' is a comparative and etymological dictionary of the hypothetical Altaic language family. It was written by linguists Sergei Starostin, Anna Dybo, and , and was published in Leiden in 2003 by Brill Publishers. It contains 3 volumes, and is a part of the ''Handbook of Oriental Studies: Section 8, Uralic and Central Asian Studies; no. 8''. The work was sponsored by the Soros Foundation, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and the Russian Foundation for Humanities. The work was also supported by Ariel Investments in the ''Tower of Babel'' project. All work was conducted within Starostin's STARLING database, available online. Proto-Turkic
Proto-Turkic is the linguistic reconstruction of the common ancestor of the Turkic languages that was spoken by the Proto-Turks before their divergence into the various Turkic peoples. Proto-Turkic separated into Oghur (western) and Common Turkic (eastern) branches. One estimate postulates Proto-Turkic to have been spoken 2,500 years ago in East Asia. The oldest records of a Turkic language, the Old Turkic Orkhon inscriptions of the 7th century Göktürk khaganate, already shows characteristics of Eastern Common Turkic and reconstruction of Proto-Turkic must rely on comparisons of Old Turkic with early sources of the Western Common Turkic branches, such as Oghuz and Kypchak, as well as the Western Oghur proper (Bulgar, Chuvash, Khazar).
