Anna Althea Hills
Anna Althea Hills (January 28, 1882 – June 13, 1930) was an American plein air painter who specialized in impressionist landscapes of the Southern California coast. Hills attended Olivet College, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. After her schooling, she worked for Arthur Wesley Dow. Hills traveled in Holland and England, attended the Academie Julian and studied with John Noble Barlow. She spent time in Lamorna Cove, home to many artists in the turn of the 20th century , including Samuel Lamorna Birch, and was with her brother, Willie Hills, at Inn cottage in the 1911 England Census. After returning to the United States, Hills traveled to the west coast and she switched from interior figures to impressionist landscapes. Ravenna, Ohio
Ravenna is a city in Portage County, Ohio, United States. It is located east of Akron. It was formed from portions of Ravenna Township in the Connecticut Western Reserve. The population was 11,323 in the 2020 Census. It is the county seat of Portage County. Ravenna was founded in 1799, platted in 1808, and is named for the city of Ravenna, Italy. The city is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. History Ravenna was founded by Benjamin Tappan, who arrived there on June 11, 1799 to lay claim in his father's name to land purchased in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Carmel-by-the-Sea (), often simply called Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. In 1906, the ''San Francisco Call'' devoted a full page to the "artists, writers and poets at Carmel-by-the-Sea", and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts." John Noble Barlow
John Noble Barlow (1861–1917) was a prominent English artist at the turn of the twentieth century, known predominantly as a landscape and seascape painter. Biography John Barlow was born in Manchester, England in 1861. He enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, and studied for two years under Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Paul Louis Delance and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. Barlow also studied in Belgium, the Netherlands and New York City in the United States. He later emigrated to the United States and became a U.S. citizen in 1887, although he returned to Europe by 1889. Barlow lived in Providence, Rhode Island, was a member of the Providence Art Club and exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. Barlow returned to England, married Marie Elizabeth Johnson (an American Citizen) in London in 1891, and then settled in St. Ives, Cornwall in 1892.
