Anita Allen (judge)
Dame Anita Mildred Allen DBE (born 21 December 1947) is the President of the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas, a position which she has held since 30 November 2010. Career Allen became a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Bahamas in 1995, and was elevated to Senior Justice in 2005. She also served as Acting Chief Justice in 2007. In November 2010, she succeeded Joan Sawyer as President of the Court of Appeal. She thus became the second woman to hold that post, and the third women in a high position in the judiciary of the Bahamas. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours. Personal life and education Allen was born in New Providence. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. University of the West Indies at Cave Hill is a public research university in Cave Hill, Barbados. It is one of five general campuses in the University of the West Indies system. Government High School is a state secondary school in Nassau, Bahamas. At one time, it was a selective grammar school and one of the country's leading institutions. Early years as a selective school Government High School became the Bahamas' first state school when it opened on 27 April 1925, providing for the education of blacks and girls who had been excluded from the colony's private schools. The President of the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas heads the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas. Legal basis The position of President of the Court of Appeal is authorised by Article 98(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Bahamas. Under Article 98(2)(b), the President may invite the Chief Justice to sit in the Court of Appeal. Under Article 99(1), the Governor-General appoints the President on the recommendation of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition. Article 102(6) governs removal of the President; the Prime Minister recommends removal to the Governor-General, who then forms a tribunal of at least three members selected by the Governor-General in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister. New Providence
New Providence is the most populous island in the Bahamas, containing more than 70% of the total population. It is the location of the national capital city of Nassau, whose boundaries are coincident with the island; it had a population of 246,329 at the 2010 Census; the latest estimate (2016) is 274,400. The island was originally under Spanish control following Christopher Columbus's discovery of the New World, but the Spanish government showed little interest in developing the island (and the Bahamas as a whole). Nassau, the island's largest city, was formerly known as Charles-town, but it was burned to the ground by the Spanish in 1684.
