Angelica
''Angelica'' is a genus of about 60 species of tall biennial and perennial herbs in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, reaching as far north as Iceland, Lapland, and Greenland. They grow to tall, with large bipinnate leaves and large compound umbels of white or greenish-white flowers. Found mainly in China, its main use was for medicine. It shows variations in fruit anatomy, leaf morphology, and subterranean structures. The genes are extremely polymorphic. Some species can be found in purple moor and rush pastures. The Angelica or Angelike (Greek: Ἀγγελική) was a celebrated dance among the ancient Greeks, performed at their feasts and important celebrations. It was thus called from the Greek ἄγγελος (''nuntius'', "messenger"), by reason, as Pollux assures us, the dancers were dressed in the habit of messengers. History This dance was perfected by the Syracusans and performed at their drinking parties. It is probably the same as the messenger's dance, called the Angelikon, which involved a series of gestures to the audience to illustrate the messenger's account of events that occurred off-stage during certain plays. Angelica Wine
Angelica wine is a historic sweet fortified wine usually from California made typically from the Mission grape. It is often served as a dessert wine. Some varieties consist of the unfermented grape juice fortified with brandy or clear spirit immediately after pressing. Others are made like port, where the only partially fermented wine, still retaining a large amount of sugar, is infused with brandy. The relatively high alcohol of the brandy arrests the fermentation, leaving a fortified wine high in alcohol and high in residual sugar (usually about 10 to 15%). It is typically made from 50% Mission wine and 50% Mission brandy. Angelica dates to the Mission period in California and its name is thought to be taken from the city of Los Angeles. Angelica is a village in the town of Angelica in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 869 at the 2010 census. The village and the town are named after Angelica Schuyler Church, a daughter of General Philip Schuyler, sister-in-law of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and wife of John Barker Church. History The community was the first to be settled in the town of Angelica, in 1802. The village of Angelica was incorporated in 1835. Angelica was formerly the county seat until the county government switched to Belmont. Founded by Philip Church, nephew of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton.
