Angus A. Buchanan
Angus A. Buchanan (January 28, 1861 – January 12, 1914) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1909 to 1914 as a Liberal member. He was born in St. Ann's, Victoria County, Nova Scotia, the son of Angus Buchanan. He married Mary Isabel McLeod. Buchanan was first elected to the provincial assembly in a 1909 by-election held after John Gillis Morrison resigned his seat. He lived in Neil Harbour in Victoria County and died there in office at the age of 52. His son Angus Gladstone Buchanan also represented Victoria County in the provincial assembly. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. The Liberals (Reformers) formed several governments in the colony between 1848 and 1867. The party split during the debate on Confederation, with Howe and most other Liberals forming an Anti-Confederation Party, while supporters of confederation joined Tory Charles Tupper's Confederation Party. Victoria County, Nova Scotia
Victoria County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Victoria and the Wagmatcook 1 reserve. History Named after Queen Victoria, it was established by statute in 1851. Cape Breton County was divided into two separate counties in that year, with the northern portion becoming Victoria County. Like other parts of Nova Scotia, the county was sparsely inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq, who hunted in the area. The earliest settlers of Victoria County were almost exclusively Loyalists, with most arriving from the United States in the years following the American Revolutionary War. It was noted by historian G.G. Patterson in 1885 that "In (Queen Victoria's) broad domain upon which the sun never sets, we venture to say there dwell none more loyal than (Victoria County's) few thousand inhabitants". John Gillis Morrison
John Gillis Morrison (November 17, 1863 – April 8, 1917) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1894 to 1909 and from 1916 to his death in 1917 as a Liberal member. He was born in Englishtown, Nova Scotia Englishtown is an unincorporated area in the Municipality of the County of Victoria, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the site of the Englishtown Ferry cable ferry that carries Nova Scotia Route 312 across St. Anns Harbour. The area was known as Mohaga .... Morrison married Mary E. MacDonald. He was mainly involved in the fishing trade and also served as an inspector of fisheries. He served on the municipal council from 1892 to 1894. He died in hospital in Halifax at the age of 53. Angus Gladstone Buchanan (August 24, 1893 – September 12, 1960) was a fish merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1920 to 1925 as a Liberal member. He was born in Neil Harbour, Nova Scotia, the son of Angus A. Buchanan and Mary Isabel McLeod. Buchanan was educated at the Halifax Academy and McGill University. In 1922, he married Katherine MacLeod. Buchanan later served as chief warden for Cape Breton Highlands National Park Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a Canadian national park on northern Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. The park was the first national park in the Atlantic provinces of Canada and covers an area of . It is one of 42 in Canada's system ....
