Angleton ISD is a public school district in Angleton, Texas (USA), operating 5 levels of education. Established in 1897, AISD encompasses in Brazoria County, serving Angleton as well as the Village of Bonney, the Sandy Point census-designated place, parts of the CDP of Rosharon, and the unincorporated areas of Chocolate Bayou, Lochridge, and Otey. Independent School District
An independent school district (ISD) is a type of school district in some US states for primary and secondary education that operates as an entity independent and separate from any municipality or county, and only under the oversight of the respective state government. As such, the administrative leadership of such districts is selected from within the district itself and has no direct responsibility to any other governmental authority. Census-designated Place
A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing cities, towns, and villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. The Brazosport Facts
The ''Brazosport Facts'' is the largest daily newspaper for Brazoria County, Texas, a part of the Greater Houston area. The newspaper is owned by Southern Newspapers Inc., and began in 1913. History The paper was started by printer Roy Ruffin as the ''Freeport Facts'' months after the 1912 founding of Freeport, Texas by the Freeport Sulphur Company. One year later, the paper was acquired by C.P. Kendall, Sr. who also owned newspapers in Port Aransas, and the ''Angleton Times'' in Angleton. A 1932 Freeport hurricane destroyed the ''Facts'' building and killed 40 people. Separate area newspapers, the ''Brazoria County Review'', ''Velasco World'', and ''West Columbia Light'' were acquired by businessman W.D. Johnston. Angleton High School
Angleton High School is a public high school located just outside the city of Angleton, Texas, United States in unincorporated Brazoria County. It is classified as a 5A school by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). It is a part of the Angleton Independent School District located in south central Brazoria County. In 2015, the school was rated " Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. Several previous school locations were destroyed by hurricanes. The high school was once located in what is now Central Elementary, as well as the former Angleton Intermediate School. The recently built high school is located at 1 Campus Dr. on the outskirts of Angleton. The varsity football stadium and baseball field is located next to Angleton High School. Otey, Texas
Otey is an unincorporated community located in northwestern Brazoria County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 318 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Otey was the site of the Palo Alto plantation owned by Robert and David G. Mills. They operated several other plantations in the state and have been said to have had $5 million before the American Civil War. They were soon bankrupted during the reconstruction era and lost their plantations to other creditors. The land surrounding the Palo Alto plantation and other plantations were within the boundaries of the Ramsey Unit, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison. It became a prison for recidivists over 25 years of age, starting in 1908. A post office was established at Otey in 1911 and remained in operation until 1973 when mail was transferred to Rosharon. Lochridge, Texas
Lochridge is an unincorporated community located in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. It formerly had a distinct community. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Lochridge began with a farm and a grocery store. A post office was established at Lochridge in 1913, with Blackburn Lochridge as postmaster. He later built a gin and sent telephone service to the area and died in 1929. His son Tom maintained the only business in the area until his mother died and moved to Rosharon. There were several scattered houses in the area, alongside the post office, in the 1930s. Lochridge no longer found representation in the Census by 1950. Geography Lochridge is located on Texas State Highway 1462 west of Rosharon in northwestern Brazoria County. Education Angleton Independent School District operates schools in the area. Chocolate Bayou, Texas
Chocolate Bayou is an unincorporated community in eastern Brazoria County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 60 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Chocolate Bayou is located near the bayou of the same name. This area was originally part of a land grant to Stephen F. Austin and James Franklin Perry. Perry's sister, Emily Austin Perry, operated the Peach Point Plantation. It produced cotton and sugar. By 1911, Chocolate Bayou gained its first post office, and three years later, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway established service through the area. During that time, it had 25 residents, a general store, and two hay shippers. The discovery of oil occurred in 1946. The post office closed in 1950 and the population dropped to 50. Rosharon, Texas
Rosharon ( ), is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) split between Brazoria County and Fort Bend County, Texas, United States, at the intersection of Farm to Market Road 521 and Farm to Market Road 1462. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,152. History The Rosharon town site went unnamed during its early years. The area was settled by cotton and sugar plantations before the Civil War. Once the Houston Tap and Brazoria Railway (''Columbia Tap'') was completed in 1859, the Rosharon stop on the train line was given the name Masterson's Station, after a nearby plantation owned by Thomas G. Masterson (ca. 1813–1884). Rosharon was known locally by trainmen as "Buttermilk Station" because an early resident was known to bring a bucket of buttermilk and a dipper to the railroad station to give the engineer and crew a drink. Sandy Point, Texas
Sandy Point is a city on Farm to Market Road 521 (FM 521) in north central Brazoria County, Texas, Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The small community is located near a state prison. In the 19th century, the settlement served nearby sugar cane and cotton plantations. Sandy Point's post office, school and railroad have disappeared, but there were two churches in the community in December 2013.
