The Angeln Saddleback, also known as the Angler wikt:Sattel#German, Sattelwikt:Schwein#German, schwein (German language, German) or Angler wikt:sadel#Danish, sadelwikt:svin#Danish, svin (Danish language, Danish), is a Rare breed (agriculture), rare breed of domestic pig grown mainly in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is a large, lop-eared, black pig with a white belt around its body at the forefeet. The breed originated in Angeln, Germany (until 1864 Denmark), by crossing a local German black-and-white Landrace with Wessex Saddleback. It became established in Schleswig-Holstein as a separate and distinct breed in 1937, and by the 1950s commanded a substantial local market share. In recent years, however, it has become nearly extinct as market sentiment has turned against its fatty meat. In modern agriculture, a rare breed is a breed of poultry or livestock that has a very small breeding population, usually from a few hundred to a few thousand. Wessex Saddleback
The Wessex Saddleback or Wessex Pig is a breed of domestic pig originating in the West Country of England, (Wessex), especially in Wiltshire and the New Forest area of Hampshire. It is black, with white forequarters. In Britain it was amalgamated with the Essex pig to form the British Saddleback, and it is extinct as a separate breed in Britain. However, the Wessex Saddleback survives in Australia and New Zealand. Description The Wessex Saddleback is black, with a white band about the forepart of the trunk, extending from one fore-foot over the shoulder to the other, forming a white band resembling a saddle (or "sheet"). It is a tall, rangy animal, adapted to foraging in woodland, its traditional use. Sattel
Sattel is a municipality in Schwyz District in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. Its name is the German word for "saddle". History The Battle of Morgarten occurred on 15 November 1315 near Sattel, at Morgarten (now part of Oberägeri). It began when a Swiss Confederation force of 1,500 infantry archers ambushed a group of Austrian soldiers of the Holy Roman Empire near the Morgarten Pass. The Swiss, led by Werner Stauffacher, thoroughly defeated the Austrians, who were under the command of Duke Leopold I of Austria. The Confederates prepared a road-block and an ambush at a point between Lake Aegeri and Morgarten pass where the small path led between the steep slope and a swamp.
