Angela Grisar
Angela Grisar (born May 2, 1973) is a Chilean retired racquetball player. She was the first South American woman's racquetball player to finish in the top 10 on the women's pro tour, doing so six straight seasons (2003-04 to 2008-09). She won numerous medals for Chile in international competitions, including at fouInternational Racquetball Federation (IRF)World Championships and three Pan American Games. International career Grisar was runner up in singles at the World Championships twice: in 2004, when she lost to Cheryl Gudinas in the final in Anyang, South Korea, and 2006, Canadian Christie Van Hees in the final in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Grisar has also been runner up in doubles twice at Worlds. Racquetball
Racquetball is a racquet sport and a team sport played with a hollow rubber ball on an indoor or outdoor court. Joseph Sobek invented the modern sport of racquetball in 1950, adding a stringed racquet to paddleball in order to increase velocity and control. Unlike most racquet sports, such as tennis and badminton, there is no net to hit the ball over, and, unlike squash, no tin (out of bounds area at the bottom of front wall) to hit the ball above. Also, the court's walls, floor, and ceiling are legal playing surfaces, with the exception of court-specific designated hinders being out-of-bounds. Racquetball is played between various players on a team who try to bounce the ball with the racquet onto the ground so it hits the wall, so that an opposing team’s player cannot bounce it back to the wall. Racquetball At The Pan American Games
Racquetball has been part of the Pan American Games since 1995 Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina, although it was not included in the 2007 Games. Racquetball was again included in the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, and 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Racquetball is on the program for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. The United States dominated the racquetball events in the first three games, but Mexico has been the dominant country in the last three games, winning all nine gold medals in the women's events and five of the nine gold medals in the men's events. Kristen Walsh Bellows (nee Walsh, May 5, 1982) is a retired American racquetball player. She represented the USA on four occasions, winning gold in Women's Singles at the 2005 Pan American Championships. On the women's professional racquetball tour, Walsh Bellows won once, and was twice ranked 4th in the season ending rankings. Rhonda Rajsich (born October 7, 1978) is an American racquetball player. She has been World Champion in Women's Singles twice, and Pan American Champion 6 times (4 times in Women's Singles & twice in Women's Doubles), as well as US Open champion four times. Rajsich was the #1 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour season ending rankings four times – three straight seasons from 2005–06 to 2007-08 and then again in 2010–11. She is of Serbian descent. Junior career Rajsich played racquetball several years as a junior with some success, although most of it came in doubles. Kerri Wachtel (born Kerri Stoffregen, November 9, 1974) is a retired American racquetball player. Wachtel was the #2 women's professional player at the end of the 2006–2007, and was #5 at the end of the 2008-09 Women's Professional Racquetball Organization season. She is a former US Open Champion. Career Professional Wachtel was a top 10 player on the women's pro tour every season between 2000–01 and 2013–14, except for 2005-06 when she took some time off to have children. But upon her return to competition she had arguably her best season as she reached a career high in the rankings, finishing #2 behind Rhonda Rajsich in 2006-07. Lori-Jane Powell
Lori Jane Powell (November 8, 1971 – November 18, 2021) was a Canadian racquetball player from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Powell was Pan American Champion twice (1 singles & 1 doubles title) and Canadian Champion five times (three singles & two doubles titles). She retired in 2007 due to a right knee injury. Professional career Powell was ranked in the top 10 rankings of the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) at the end of four seasons. Her career best finishes were two semi-finals. 2014 Racquetball World Championships
The International Racquetball Federation's 17th Racquetball World Championships were held in Burlington, Ontario, Canada from June 14 to 21, 2014. This was the second time Worlds were in Canada. Previously, they were in Montreal in 1992. American Rocky Carson and Mexican Paola Longoria were the incumbent champions in men's and women's singles, respectively, and both successfully defended their titles. Longoria was also the incumbent champion in women's doubles with Samantha Salas and they also successfully defended their title. Fellow Mexicans Alvaro Beltran and Javier Moreno were the defending champions in men's doubles, but Mexico didn't make the podium in Burlington. Samantha Salas Solís (born December 15, 1986) is a Mexican racquetball player. Salas is the current World Champion in both Women's Doubles - winning that title for a fifth time with Paola Longoria at the 2022 World Championships in San Luis Potosí, Mexico - and Mixed Doubles with Rodrigo Montoya. She is also the current Pan American Games Champion in Women's Doubles, winning that title with Longoria for a third consecutive time in 2019 in Lima. Paola Michelle Longoria López (born July 20, 1989) is a Mexican racquetball player. She is the current Women's World Champion in both Singles and Doubles, winning both divisions at the 2022 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships in San Luis Potosi. Longoria is the winningest player in IRF World Championship history, and she is the only woman to win both singles and doubles at Worlds.
