Angel Families
Angel Families is a term used to politicize victims killed by undocumented immigrants in the United States. President Donald Trump has invoked Angel Families to argue for his immigration policy, though some of the families have objected to the politicization of their loved one's death. Trump began to spotlight the issue during his 2016 presidential campaign, a tactic that some media organizations compared to candidate Hillary Clinton's campaigning alongside Mothers of the Movement (a group founded in the wake of the death of Trayvon Martin to raise awareness about racial profiling), but has been accused of using bereavement to promote racism. Mothers of the Movement is a group of women whose African American children have been killed by police officers or by gun violence. Members of the group have appeared on various television shows, at award ceremonies, and political events to share their experiences losing a son or daughter to police violence and advocate for political change. The Mothers of the Movement started as a result of Trial of George Zimmerman, the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman after he Killing of Trayvon Martin, fatally shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin. The women have attended many conventions to spread awareness of the crisis that is police brutality in the United States. Trayvon Martin
Trayvon Benjamin Martin (February 5, 1995 – February 26, 2012) was a 17-year-old African-American from Miami Gardens, Florida, who was fatally shot in Sanford, Florida, by George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old Hispanic American. Martin had accompanied his father to visit his father's fiancée at her townhouse at The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford. On the evening of February 26, Martin was walking back to the fiancée's house from a nearby convenience store. Zimmerman, a member of the community watch, saw Martin and reported him to the Sanford Police as suspicious. Several minutes later, an altercation happened and Zimmerman fatally shot Martin in the chest. Zimmerman was injured during the altercation with Martin.
