"Angel" is a song by American R&B singer Angela Winbush. The track was released in 1987 as the first single from her debut album, ''Sharp'' on Polygram Records. As half of the duo of René & Angela, Winbush had two number-one R&B hits with " Save Your Love (For #1)" and "Your Smile." After a decade, René Moore and Winbush went their separate ways. "Angel", her solo-debut, spent two weeks at the top of the US Billboard R&B chart. It was also named by ''Billboard'' the number nine most successful R&B single of 1987. Despite the success, "Angel" did not make the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The single was nominated for a 1988 Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Single, Female. Angela Lisa Winbush (born January 18, 1955) is an American R&B/soul singer-songwriter, musician and record producer who rose to fame first in the 1980s R&B duo René & Angela, also scoring hits as a solo artist. To date, Winbush has sold over 10 million albums and singles worldwide. Biography Early life and career Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Angela began singing in church. She grew up in a middle-class area of St. Louis. Angela is a graduate of Northwest High School. She did not initially aspire to a career in music, instead studying architecture at Howard University, singing only to earn extra money. She continued to sing in church while at Howard as well as with gospel legend Richard Smallwood. She also performed as a singer with a group called "Hot Tea" while she attended Howard University. History Edward Lewis, Clarence O. Smith, Cecil Hollingsworth and Jonathan Blount founded Essence Communications Inc. (ECI) in 1968. It began publishing ''Essence'' magazine in May 1970. PolyGram N.V. was a multinational entertainment company and major music record label formerly based in the Netherlands. The album was released in September 1987 on Mercury Records and peaked at #7 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart and at #81 on the ''Billboard'' 200.
