Andrew Wood Of Largo
Sir Andrew Wood of Largo (died 1515) was a Scottish sea captain. Beginning as a merchant in Leith, he was involved in national naval actions and rose to become Lord High Admiral of Scotland. He was knighted c. 1495. He may have transported James III across the Firth of Forth to escape the rebels in 1488. He superintended the rebuilding of Dunbar Castle in 1497. One of Andrew's sons, John Wood was assassinated in 1570. Andrew Wood is the subject of the historical novel '' The Admiral'' by Nigel Tranter. Naval career Wood began his naval career as a privateer under James III (reigned 1460–1488), and flourished under James IV (reigned 1488–1513). By 1489 he owned the ''Flower'' and the ''Yellow Carvel'', both fighting ships, which fought and captured five English ships offshore near Dunbar. Andrew Wood (c.1617– 1695) was a Scottish minister who served as Protestant Bishop of Caithness. Life The son of Rev David Wood, Church of Scotland minister for the parish of Edzell, by a daughter of John Guthrie, Bishop of Moray, he followed his father's career in the ministry. Andrew Wood MD FRCSEd FRSE LLD (1 September 1810–25 January 1881) was a 19th-century Scottish surgeon who served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1855 to 1857. Life He was born at 42 South Hanover Street in Edinburgh on 1 September 1810 the son of Mary Oswald Gillespie and her husband, William Wood FRSE (1782-1858), a surgeon. He was educated at the High School in Edinburgh and then studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh receiving his doctorate (MD) in 1831. He joined his father operating from premises at 87 George Street in Edinburgh's New Town close to their home. Wood variously worked also at the New Town Dispensary, Heriot's Hospital, Merchant Maiden Hospital, Trades Maiden Hospital and at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (rising to Manager of the latter). Andrew Trew Wood
Andrew Trew Wood (26 August 1826 – 21 January 1903) was a Canadian businessman and parliamentarian. Born in Mountnorris, County Armagh, Ireland, the son of David Wood, a merchant, and Frances Bigham Trew, he emigrated to Canada sometime before 1846. He found employment at James Shepard Ryan's hardware store in Toronto in that year; in 1848, he was put in charge of the branch in Hamilton. In 1856, he opened his own business. Wood was a founding director of the Hamilton and Lake Erie Railway Company in 1869 and the Ontario Cotton Mills Company in 1881. In 1893, he became one of the owners of the Hamilton Blast Furnace Company; when it merged with the Ontario Rolling Mills Company to form the Hamilton Steel and Iron Company in 1899, Wood served as its first president. Sir Andrew Marley Wood GCMG (born 2 January 1940) is a former British diplomat. Born in Gibraltar, Wood was educated at Ardingly College and King's College, Cambridge. In 1964, he was posted to Moscow by the British Diplomatic Service. Following a range of diplomatic posts he served as British Ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1985 to 1989. From 1995 to 2000 Wood served as British Ambassador to Russia and Moldova before retiring from diplomatic service. In addition to diplomatic service, Wood has served on the boards or executive councils of several institutions, including the PBN Company, the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce, the Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust, for which he was director, and the Britain Russia Centre, which he chaired. Andy Wood, (born 1967) is a British social historian and academic. Mostly, he works on the early modern period (1500–1800), but his work on folklore has taken him into the mid-twentieth century. His research interests include popular politics, rebellion, popular memory, belief, popular culture, local identity, folklore, migration patterns, urban and rural society, the mid-Tudor crisis, the English Revolution, popular understandings of Renaissance drama, class identities, and local traditions. With his friend John H. Arnold, he co-authored a critique of Ken MacLeod's science-fiction writing. He also has an interest in the history of the British Left in the late twentieth century. His fourth book, ''The Memory of the People: Custom and Popular Senses of the Past in Early Modern England'', won the American Historical Association's Leo Gershoy Award. Andrew Wood (singer)
Andrew Patrick Wood (January 8, 1966 – March 19, 1990) was an American musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist for the alternative rock bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. Wood formed Malfunkshun in 1980 with his older brother Kevin Wood on guitar and Regan Hagar on drums. The band used alter ego personas onstage, with Wood using the name Landrew the Love Child. Though the band only had two songs released, "With Yo' Heart (Not Yo' Hands)" and "Stars-n-You", on the '' Deep Six'' compilation album, they are often cited as being among the "founding fathers" of the Seattle grunge movement. During his time in Malfunkshun, Wood started relying heavily on drugs, entering rehab in 1985. Andrew "Andy" Wood (born 1977) is an American comedian and a founder/producer of Portland's Bridgetown Comedy Festival. He is a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan currently residing in Los Angeles, California.
