André And Paul Vera
André and Paul Vera were French brothers who were pioneers of the Art Deco style. André Vera (1881–1971) was a theoretician on garden design and a town planner. Paul Vera (1882–1957) was a painter and decorator. The Vera brothers collaborated on formal, geometric garden designs in Art Deco style. The brothers joined with other artists to create ''L'Atelier Français'', a cooperative business that borrowed organizational idea from the Wiener Werkstätte. Art Deco
Art Deco, short for the French ''Arts Décoratifs'', and sometimes just called Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design, that first appeared in France in the 1910s (just before World War I), and flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s and 1930s. Through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, including how people look (clothing, fashion and jewelry), Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings (from skyscrapers to cinemas), ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. André Vera
André Vera (1881–1971) was a French garden designer, town planner and pioneer of the Art Deco style. He is known for his collaboration with his brother, the painter and decorator Paul Vera. He wanted to renew French design, which he felt had been in decline since the 1840s, and to introduce a modern French style that maintained continuity with earlier French tradition. He was an advocate of the formal French garden, with strictly geometrical designs based on lines and squares in place of the curvilinear forms of Art Nouveau. In urban design he stressed the importance of including trees as architectural elements, which he thought would enhance the mental and physical health of the residents. Paul Vera
Paul Vera (1882–1957) was a French painter, designer and pioneer of the Art Deco style. He is known for his collaboration on garden designs with his brother André Vera. Life Paul Vera was born in Paris in 1882. His father was Gustave Lėon Vera, an architect, and his older brother André became a garden designer. He was raised in Paris, and became interested in painting while still young. He would often go with Louis Abel-Truchet, an artist, on excursion to paint ''en plein air''. He studied painting for ten years, first at the Académie Julian, then the École des Beaux-Arts and finally at the Académie Ranson. In 1904 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne. He was a friend of the artists Roger de La Fresnaye and André Mare of the Puteaux Group. Paul was influenced by cubism based on the mathematical principles of the golden ratio. Louis Süe
Louis Süe (14 July 1875 – 7 August 1968) was a French painter, architect, designer and decorator. He and André Mare co-founded the ''Compagnie des arts français'', which produced Art Deco furniture and interior decorations for wealthy customers. He also designed buildings and interiors, including the interiors of two passenger liners. Early years Marie-Louis Süe was born on 14 July 1875 in Bordeaux. He was the grand nephew of the writer Eugène Sue. His father was a wine merchant. After graduating from secondary school he entered the Collège Sainte-Barbe in Paris to prepare for the ''École Polytechnique''. However, in 1893 he left Sainte-Barbe and entered the ''École des Beaux-Arts'' where he studied painting in the studio of Victor Laloux (1850–1937). André Groult (27 August 1884 – 1966) was a French decorator and furniture designer., and one of the most prominent figures of the Art Deco style. His work featured curving and organic shapes, and extremely rich materials. His work has been described as compromising between tradition and modernism. Gustave Louis Jaulmes
Gustave Louis Jaulmes (14 April 1873 – 7 January 1959) was an eclectic French artist who followed the neoclassical trend in the Art Deco movement. He created monumental frescoes, paintings, posters, illustrations, cartoons for tapestries and carpets and decorations for objects such as enamels, sets of plates and furniture. Life Early years Gustave Louis Jaulmes was born in Lausanne, Switzerland on 14 April 1873. He attended the ''École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts'' in Paris. Jaulmes initially trained as an architect, and worked with Victor Laloux at the Gare d'Orsay before taking up painting. In 1902 he abandoned architecture, and after a few months in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens at the ''Académie Julian'' he decided to become a decorative painter. André Mare
Charles André Mare (1885–1932), or André-Charles Mare, was a French painter and textile designer, and co-founder of the Company of French Art (''la Compagnie des Arts Français'') in 1919. He was a designer of colorful textiles, and was one of the founders of the Art Deco movement. As a soldier in the French Army in World War I, Mare led the development of military camouflage, painting artillery using Cubism techniques to deceive the eye. His ink and watercolour painting ''Le canon de 280 camouflé'' (The Camouflaged 280 Gun) shows the close interplay of abstract art and military application at that time. He authored the book ''Cubisme et Camouflage'', 1914–1918. Mare sketched and painted scenes based on his experiences in World War I.
