André Fernando Cardoso Santos Martins (born 3 September 1984) is a Portuguese professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Continental team . In 2018, he was suspended for four years – backdated to June 2017 – after failing a drugs test for erythropoietin (EPO). Career Following a two-year stint with , Cardoso signed with for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Born in Porto, Portugal, Cardoso resides in Andorra la Vella, Andorra and Gondomar, Portugal. In September 2016, announced that Cardoso would join them for the 2017 season with a role as a mountain domestique for Alberto Contador and Bauke Mollema. The Volta a Portugal ( en, Tour of Portugal), also known as Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta ( en, Tour of Portugal on Bicycle), is an annual multi-stage road bicycle racing competition held in Portugal. The competition takes place during a two-week span. History The competition started in 1927, although its second edition only occurred in 1931. In 1936 and 1937 the tour did not take place. During World War II the race was cancelled between 1942 and 1945. In 1975 the competition was skipped due to the Carnation Revolution. In the period 1940-1980 the competition was staged over three weeks. Since the 1980s it was reduced to the period of two weeks. As of 2005 the race consisted only of ten stages. Erythropoietin (; EPO), also known as erythropoetin, haematopoietin, or haemopoietin, is a glycoprotein cytokine secreted mainly by the kidneys in response to cellular hypoxia; it stimulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) in the bone marrow. Alberto Contador Velasco (; born 6 December 1982) is a Spanish former professional cyclist.
