Andrew Wight
Andrew Wight (14 November 1959 – 4 February 2012) was an Australian screenwriter and producer best known for his 2011 film ''Sanctum''. He produced over 45 films including television documentaries, live television specials and 3D IMAX films. His credits include ''Ghosts of the Abyss'', ''Aliens of the Deep'' and '' Expedition: Bismarck''. Wight was honoured with the Australian Geographic Society Spirit of Adventure Awards in 1989. Wight grew up on the family farm "Tarqua" near Harrow in western-Victoria, and attended Hamilton College as a boarder between 1972 and 1977. It was here that he developed a taste for caving, exploring the nearby Byaduk Caves network of lava caves, under the direction of his Chemistry teacher, accompanied by a few other close school friends. In 1988, he eventually went on to attempt a record cave dive in ''Pannikin Plains Cave'' on the Nullarbor Plain, where flash floods turned the expedition into a life-or-death adventure. Sanctum (film)
''Sanctum'' is a 2011 3D action-thriller film directed by Alister Grierson and written by John Garvin and Andrew Wight. It stars Richard Roxburgh, Rhys Wakefield, Alice Parkinson, Dan Wyllie, and Ioan Gruffudd. Wight also produced the film, with James Cameron as executive producer. The film was released in the United States on 4 February 2011 by Universal Pictures to predominantly mixed reviews from critics and grossed $108 million on a $30 million budget. The Cave Divers Association of Australia (CDAA) is a cave diving organisation which was formed in September 1973 to represent the interests of Recreational diving, recreational scuba divers who dive in water‐filled caves and sinkholes principally in the Lower South East (now called the Limestone Coast) of South Australia (SA) and secondly in other parts of Australia. Its formation occurred after a series of diving fatalities in waterfilled caves and sinkholes in the Mount Gambier region between 1969 and 1973 and in parallel to a Government of South Australia, South Australian Government inquiry into these deaths. The CDAA's major achievement has been the dramatic reduction of fatalities via the introduction of a site rating scheme and an associated testing system which was brought in during the mid-1970s. Michael V. deGruy (December 29, 1951 – February 4, 2012) was an American documentary filmmaker specializing in underwater cinematography. His credits include ''Life in the Freezer'', '' Trials of Life'', ''The Blue Planet'' and ''Pacific Abyss''. He was also known for his storytelling, including a passionate TED talk about his love of the ocean on the Mission Blue Voyage. His company, Film Crew Inc., specialized in underwater cinematography, filming for BBC, PBS, National Geographic, and The Discovery Channel. His notable accomplishments include diving beneath thermal vents in both the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.
