Andrew Snoid (born Andrew McLennan) is a New Zealand musician, singer, and songwriter. He was featured in bands such as The Plague, The Whizz Kids, Blam Blam Blam (briefly), Pop Mechanix, The Swingers, and Coconut Rough. Snoid is best remembered as the writer and singer of the Coconut Rough song ''Sierra Leone'', which was a big domestic hit in 1983, staying in the charts for 17 weeks. Citizen Band (music Band)
Citizen Band were a New Zealand band formed by the brothers Geoff and Mike Chunn, both of whom had previously been members of Split Enz. Band members Geoff Chunn played guitar, sang, and wrote most of the songs. Mike Chunn played bass guitar. Other members were guitarist Greg Clark and drummer Brent Eccles, both previously in New Zealand glam rock band Space Waltz. Formed in 1977 after Mike Chunn left Split Enz due to his struggles with agoraphobia, the band played concerts around Auckland including a free concert in Albert Park and a one-day rock festival. The band recorded their first album '' Citizen Band'' at Mandrill studios, produced by the band and Glyn Tucker. RTC is a New Zealand record label which licensed recordings from overseas Independent labels in the United States and in the United Kingdom. Background The label was started in the late 1970s by John McCready, Brian Pitts, and Warwick Woodward. While still a fledgling indie distributor, they had Kama Fitzgerald in their employ who had previously worked for PolyGram marketing manager Stuart Rubin. In 1980, it was reported by Phil Gifford in the October 11 issue of '' Billboard'' that as an independent NZ label they had made a first. With the artists on their label having both an album and single at no 1 on the NZ charts, it was the first time an Independent label in New Zealand had achieved this. The album at the top of the charts was ''Black Sea'' by XTC, and the single was " Food For Thought" by UB 40. In 1981, it was reported by Glenn A. Terrorways
Terrorways, not to be confused with Punk bands The Tearaways from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, or from Hertfordshire, England, were a New Zealand punk rock band from Auckland, who were big on the local punk scene. They are also remembered for their songs "She's a Mod" and "Never Been to Borstal". Background The group which played at the Zwines club was a favourite of Aucklands Boot Boys. At the end of 1978, drummer Kerry Buchanan was replaced by Gary Hunt who had come from Gary Havoc & The Hurricanes. The original band called it a day and their final performance was on 1 December 1979. In 1980, the group got together to play a gig at the XS Café. The group appears on the Ripper Records ''AK79'' compilation. Later years Kerry Buchanan would become a journalist and write for ''Real Groove'' magazine. The Plague (New Zealand Band)
The Plague was a New Zealand theatrical punk/art rock band that existed from 1977 to 1979, and was led by Richard von Sturmer. Their most famous performance was at the Nambassa Music Festival in 1979 and they recorded four tracks for the ''Infectious'' EP. Von Sturmer went on to a career in writing and film-making and other members went on to play in bands such as The Whizz Kids, Blam Blam Blam, The Swingers, Coconut Rough and Pop Mechanix. Jan Hellriegel
Jan Hellriegel is a singer/songwriter based in Auckland, New Zealand. Her first recorded appearances were in Dunedin band Working With Walt in the mid-1980s when Jan studied at the University of Otago in Dunedin. She then formed all-woman band Cassandra's Ears, moving back to Auckland and going solo in the early 90s. Hellriegel has released four solo studio albums, ''It's My Sin'' 1992, ''Tremble'' 1995, ''All Grown Up'' 2009, and ''Sportsman of the Year'' in 2019. She has toured with and supported many international acts including The Cure, Jeff Buckley, David Byrne, Diesel, and Ron Sexsmith. Coconut Rough were a short-lived New Zealand pop/ new wave band formed in 1982. Despite their 1983 first single, "Sierra Leone", hitting the top five, and the band being named ''Most Promising Group of the Year'' at that year's RIANZ Awards they split up in 1984. History The band was formed in 1982 by lead singer Andrew Snoid, formerly with New Zealand bands the Whizz Kids, Pop Mechanix and Australian-based New Zealand group the Swingers, and guitarist Mark Bell. Bell later joined Snoid in a reformed Pop Mechanix. Other member were bassist Dennis "Choc" Te Whare, keyboardist Stuart Pearce and drummer Paul Hewitt, and later bassist Bones Hillman. They decided on the name "Coconut Rough" based on a type of sweet treat popular in Australia and New Zealand. The band's biggest hit was also their first single.
