He was the first Australian biathlete to compete at the Olympics. On his debut, he came 50th and 47th out of 63 and 62 competitors respectively in the 10 km and 20 km events. The biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games (Serbo-Croatian and Slovene: ''XIV. Zimske olimpijske igre''; Cyrillic: XIV Зимске олимпијске игре; mk, XIV Зимски олимписки игри, XIV Zimski olimpiski igri) and commonly known as Sarajevo '84 ( Cyrillic: Сарајево '84; mk, Сараево '84), was a winter multi-sport event held between 8 and 19 February 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
