Andrew Mack
Andrew Mack (1780 – July 12, 1854) was an American businessman and politician who, among other things, co-founded the '' Detroit Free Press'', served as mayor of Detroit, Michigan, and whose land holdings became a portion of the town of Marysville. Early life Mack was born in New London, Connecticut, and was a sailor as a young man, having sailed around the world three times. In 1804, he drove a herd of merino sheep that he had purchased in Spain westward to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he established a wool factory and a hotel. In the War of 1812, he was the captain of a military company and subsequently served as member of the Cincinnati City Council and as a state senator in the Ohio General Assembly. He ran for Mayor of Cincinnati in the spring of 1829, but lost to the incumbent Isaac G. Burnet. Vicksburg, Michigan
Vicksburg is a village in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,706 at the 2020 census. The west part of the village is in Schoolcraft Township and the east part is in Brady Township. History John Vickers, the town's namesake, settled in the area in 1831. It was incorporated as a village of the state in 1871. A Michigan Registered Historic Site plaque reads: ''VICKERS' MILL: In 1831, John Vickers built a brush dam over the eight-foot waterfall on Portage Creek and erected a log grist mill. The mill is believed to have been the first mill in Kalamazoo County. The dam created a pond that supplied water power to the mill and formed the sizeable Sunset Lake, around which pioneers built homes and set up businesses. Vickers died in 1842. Great Lakes Waterway
The Great Lakes Waterway (GLW) is a system of natural channels and artificial canals which enable navigation between the North American Great Lakes. Though all of the lakes are naturally connected as a chain, water travel between the lakes was impeded for centuries by obstacles such as Niagara Falls and the rapids of the St. Marys River. Its principal civil engineering works are the Welland Canal between Lakes Ontario and Erie, and the huge Soo Locks between Huron and Superior. Dredged channels were constructed in the St. Marys River, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River between Huron and Erie. Sawmill
A sawmill (saw mill, saw-mill) or lumber mill is a facility where logs are cut into lumber. Modern sawmills use a motorized saw to cut logs lengthwise to make long pieces, and crosswise to length depending on standard or custom sizes (dimensional lumber). The "portable" sawmill is of simple operation. The log lies flat on a steel bed, and the motorized saw cuts the log horizontally along the length of the bed, by the operator manually pushing the saw.
