Andrew J. Van Vorhes
Andrew Jackson Van Vorhes (January 24, 1824 – January 10, 1873) was an American politician and newspaper editor. Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, his father was Abraham Van Vorhes and his brother was Nelson H. Van Vorhes. He worked in his father's paper the ''Hocking Valley Gazette'' in Athens, Ohio. Then he and his brother bought the paper and changed the name to ''The Athens Messenger''. He was recording clerk in the Ohio General Assembly. In 1855, Van Vorhes moved to Stillwater, Minnesota Territory, where he started the ''Stillwater Messenger.'' The Minnesota Supreme Court is the Supreme court, highest court in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The court hears cases in the Supreme Court chamber in the Minnesota State Capitol or in the nearby Minnesota Judicial Center. History The court was first assembled as a three-judge panel in 1849 when Minnesota was still a Minnesota Territory, territory. The first members were lawyers from outside the region, appointed by President Zachary Taylor. The court system was rearranged when Minnesota became a state in 1858. Abraham Van Vorhes
Abraham Van Vorhes (December 2, 1793 – January 24, 1879; known commonly by his military rank as Major Van Vorhes) was an American politician, surveyor and pioneer. Pennsylvania and Ohio Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, Abraham Van Vorhes married Mary W. Vorhees in 1817. He served in the Pennsylvania militia and acquired the rank of major before moving to Alexander Township, Ohio in 1832 and then to Athens, Ohio in 1838, where he was a mechanic and editor of the ''Hocking Valley Gazette'' (later the '' Athens Messenger''). While in Athens, Van Vorhes served as Athens County Treasurer and Surveyor. From 1835 to 1839, he was postmaster for the Hebbardsville post office. A member of the Whig Party and later the Republican Party, he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1840 and was later elected to the Ohio Senate in October 1842, where he served four terms.
