Andrew J. Robinson (died 1922) was a builder in New York City and partner in the firm Robinson & Wallace established in 1872 and later reorganized as the Andrew J. Robinson Company. His firms built St. Luke's Hospital (New York City) (1895), the St. Paul Building (1897), New York Hospital, the Havemeyer Hall (1898), the East River Savings Bank, Blair Building, B.F. Goodrich Company Building at 1780 Broadway (1909) and Pabst Hotel (1902). ''Real Estate Record and Builders' Guide'' referred to him as one of New York's most prominent builders for more than 50 years in his 1922 obituary. Robinson was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey and moved to New York City to work as a mason when he was 17. In 1900 ''The New York Times'' reported on the company. Drew King Robinson was his son. York & Sawyer
York and Sawyer was an American architectural firm active between 1898 and 1949. The firms' work is exemplary of Beaux-Arts architecture as it was practiced in the United States. The partners Edward York (July 23, 1863– December 30, 1928) and Philip Sawyer (1868–1949) both trained in the office of McKim, Mead & White in the 1890s. In 1898, they established their independent firm, based in New York City. Their structure for the New-York Historical Society (1908) was extended in 1938 by Walker & Gillette. Their ability to organize, separate and coordinate mixed uses in a building is exemplified by their massive New York Athletic Club. York and Sawyer became known as specialists in the design of banks and hospitals. Havemeyer Family
The Havemeyer family is a prominent New York family of German origin that owned significant sugar refining interests in the United States. History William Havemeyer (1770-1851) left Germany at age 15 and arrived in New York City after learning the trade of sugar refining in London. In New York he managed a sugar house on Pine Street before opening his own refinery on Vandam Street with his brother, Frederick Christian Havemeyer, who had come to New York in 1802. Together the two brothers operated the W. & F.C. Havemeyer Company sugar refineries, before passing the business on to their sons. His son William Frederick Havemeyer, retired from the sugar refining business in 1842 and entered politics, eventually serving three terms as Mayor of New York.
