Andrew Carnell
Andrew Greene Carnell, (April 10, 1877 – January 26, 1951) was a Canadian politician who served as mayor of St. John's, Newfoundland. Born in St. John's, Carnell received his early education at Bishop Feild College and the Methodist College before going into his father's business as an undertaker. He married Mabel Payne in 1904. They had two sons and four daughters. His son Geoffrey later served in the Newfoundland assembly. After several failed attempts in colonial politics, he decided to enter municipal politics. In the municipal elections of 1929 for St. John's, he was elected deputy mayor. After the sitting mayor, Charles Howlett, died in 1932, Carnell became acting mayor until he was elected to the post officially by acclamation the following year. He was reelected to the position continuously until 1949. Dominion Of Newfoundland
Newfoundland was a British dominion in eastern North America, today the modern Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was established on 26 September 1907, and confirmed by the Balfour Declaration of 1926 and the Statute of Westminster of 1931. It included the island of Newfoundland, and Labrador on the continental mainland. Newfoundland was one of the original dominions within the meaning of the Balfour Declaration and accordingly enjoyed a constitutional status equivalent to the other dominions of the time. In 1934, Newfoundland became the only dominion to give up its self-governing status, which ended 79 years of self-government. The abolition of self-government came about because of a crisis in Newfoundland's public finances in 1932. Bishop Feild College
Bishop Feild College (originally Church of England Academy; formerly Church of England College and Bishop Feild Elementary; currently Bishop Feild School), founded in 1844, is a school in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's, Newfoundland. Founded as the Church of England Academy, it was renamed in 1892 as the Church of England College in 1892, before its 1894 name change to Bishop Feild College. The renaming was in honor of Bishop Edward Feild, a school inspector and second bishop of Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland. Originally an Anglican-affiliated boys school of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (St. John's), Newfoundland Cathedral, it later also admitted girls. Geoffrey Carnell
Geoffrey Conrad Carnell (January 19, 1915 – February 15, 1987) was a businessperson and politician in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's North from 1962 to 1966 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of mayor Andrew Carnell and Mabel E. Payne, he was born in St. John's and was educated at Bishop Feild College. He entered the family undertaking and carriage manufacturing business as a wheelwright in 1932; he succeeded his father as company president in 1937. Carnell was also president of Georgetown Realty Company Ltd. and a director of Ready Credit Acceptance Corporation and the Insurance Corporation of Newfoundland. He served overseas with the 166th Newfoundland Field Regiment during World War II. He married Joan Marguerite Milley; the couple had four children. ''Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador'' is an Encyclopedia commissioned by Joey Smallwood to capture the people, places, events and history of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Charles Howlett
Charles Joseph Howlett (January 25, 1885 – March 31, 1932) was a dental surgeon, politician and amateur actor in Newfoundland. He served as mayor of St. John's from 1929 to 1932. The son of Mary Byrne and John Howlett, he was born in St. John's and was educated at St. Patrick's Hall, Saint Bonaventure's College, the University of Toronto and the Philadelphia Dental College. He set up practice in St. John's in 1906. In 1908, Howlett married Eleanor M. Walsh. Before being elected as mayor in 1929, he was active in local amateur theatre productions. A Crown colony or royal colony was a colony administered by The Crown within the British Empire. There was usually a Governor, appointed by the British monarch on the advice of the UK Government, with or without the assistance of a local Council. In some cases, this Council was split into two: an Executive Council and a Legislative Council, and was similar to the Privy Council that advises the Monarch. Members of Executive Councils were appointed by the Governors, and British citizens resident in Crown colonies either had no representation in local government, or limited representation. The term ''Dominion'' is used to refer to one of several self-governing nations of the British Empire. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Harry Mews
Henry George Reginald Mews (December 18, 1897 – January 6, 1982) was the eighth mayor of St. John's, Newfoundland and a political leader in the province. He was born in St. John's, the son of Arthur Mews, a civil servant, and Mabel Woods, the daughter of Henry J. B. Woods, who served in the colonial cabinet and was postmaster general from 1902 to 1914. Mews was educated at the Methodist College in St. John's and served as a lieutenant with the Newfoundland Regiment during World War I. After his return, he worked with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Ontario. Mews contracted tuberculosis and was treated in New York state. He returned to St. John's in 1927.
