Andrew Barclay (bookbinder)
Andrew Barclay (1737–1823) was a Scottish bookbinder who emigrated from Kinross, Fifeshire, to Boston in the British-American colonies in the mid-eighteenth century. As the American Revolutionary War drew near, Barclay sided with the Loyalists and was compelled to leave Boston when the British were driven out in March 1776. Upon leaving Boston he was assigned a command in charge of getting Loyalist refugees out of Boston to Nova Scotia. Soon after, he continued his trade in British-occupied New York for the duration of the war. Bookbinder's trade labels like Barclay's, found on the inside cover of some of his works, are considered a rarity among books printed in colonial America. Andrew Jeffrey Gunion Barclay (1849–1943) was a Scottish mathematician, known for being one of the founders of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. Life and work Barclay studied at University of Edinburgh where he graduated in mathematics in 1880., MacTutor History of Mathematics. Andrew Barclay (October 1719 – June 19, 1775) was a Scottish-American merchant who served as the 4th president of the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York. Early life Barclay was born in Albany in the Province of New York in British America in October 1719. He was the son of Anna Dorothea (née Drauyer) Barclay, a Dutch speaker, and the Rev. Thomas Barclay, a native of Scotland who became the first rector of St. Peter's Church in Albany. Among his siblings was the Rev. William Henry Barclay, rector of Trinity Church in Manhattan who graduated from Yale College in 1734 and was the father of Thomas Henry Barclay. Barclay, who was educated in Albany, was the maternal grandson of Gertrud (née Van Schaick) Drauyer and Capt. Andries Drauyer, a Dane in the Dutch navy. Andrew Whyte Barclay MD (1817–1884), was a Scottish physician. Biography Barclay was born at Dysart, Fife, and educated at the High School of Edinburgh. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and after visiting Berlin and Paris took the MD degree in 1839. He later attended Caius College, Cambridge, graduating MB in 1847 and MD in 1852. He was elected assistant physician to St George's Hospital in 1857, and devoted much attention to the interests of the medical school, lecturing on medicine, and serving as physician from 1862 to 1882. At the College of Physicians he was examiner in medicine, councillor, censor, Lumleian lecturer, and Harveian orator (for 1881), being elected treasurer in 1884. Andrew Barclay Sons & Co., currently operating as Brodie Engineering, is a builder of steam and later fireless and diesel locomotives. The company's history dates to foundation of an engineering workshop in 1840 in Kilmarnock, Scotland. After a long period of operation the company was acquired by the Hunslet group in 1972 and renamed Hunslet-Barclay; in 2007 the company changed hands after bankruptcy becoming Brush-Barclay as part of the FKI Group. In 2011 Brush Traction and Brush-Barclay were acquired from FKI by Wabtec. The site was acquired by Brodie Engineering Ltd in July 2020.
