Andree Sfeir-Semler
Andrée Sfeir-Semler (born 1953 in Beirut, Lebanon) is an art historian and gallery owner. The Sfeir-Semler Gallery has branches in Hamburg, Germany and Beirut, Lebanon, and both locations represent artists working in the field of conceptual art with a preference on political subjects. Since 2003, Sfeir-Semler Gallery has focused on contemporary art from the Arab World. Early life and education Andrée Sfeir-Semler studied fine art at the American University of Beirut and filmmaking at the "Centre for cinema and television" in Beirut. In 1975 she was awarded a Fulbright Program Scholarship and a DAAD German Academic Exchange Service scholarship to continue her studies as a filmmaker. She opted for the latter. She continued her studies at the universities of Munich, Bielefeld with Wolfgang Mager & Juergen Kocka and at the Sorbonne with Pierre Bourdieu. The American University of Beirut (AUB) ( ar, الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت) is a private, non-sectarian, and independent university chartered in New York with its campus in Beirut, Lebanon. Rayyane Tabet
Rayyane Tabet (born 1983) is a Lebanese visual artist, he is known for his sculpture. He has lived and worked in both Beirut and San Francisco. Early life and education Rayyane Tabet was born in 1983 in Ashqout, Lebanon. He has training as an artist and as an architect, and has a Bachelor of Architecture degree (2008) from Cooper Union, and a MFA degree (2012) from the University of California, San Diego. Art career Much of Tabet's work is based on research and mostly about socio-political history, informed by architecture. The ''Five Distant Memories'' series was work from 2006 until 2016, about the transformation of Tabet's early childhood memories in relationship to objects, and situations. Rabih Mroué
Rabih Mroué ( ar, ربيع مروة, born 1967) is a Lebanese stage and film actor, playwright, and visual artist. Rooted in theater, his work includes videos and installation art; the latter sometimes incorporates photography, text and sculpture. Biography Born in Beirut, Mroué lives in Hazmieh, Lebanon. He is a grandson of Husayn Muruwwa. He graduated in theater in 1989 from Lebanese University, where he met his wife, Lina Saneh. He has been creating theater pieces since 1990. Balthasar Burkhard
Balthasar Burkhard (24 December 1944 – 16 April 2010) was a Swiss photographer who received international recognition for his large-format monochromatic photographic series. Life Born in Bern in 1944, Burkhard was apprenticed to photographer Kurt Blum. After opening his studio in 1965, he was retained as documentation photographer by the ''Kunsthalle Bern'', cooperating closely with curator Harald Szeemann and portraying many artists. This triggered Burkhard's interest in contemporary art. He came to international attention in 1969 through the exhibition of large-format photographs created together with the Bernese artist Markus Raetz, which included a 1:1 scale photograph of Raetz's study. Christine Streuli
Christine Streuli (born 23 July 1975) is a Swiss-born contemporary artist who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Biography Streuli grew up in Switzerland in Zurich and in Langenthal and in the USA in Chicago. From 1997 to 2001 she studied at the Zurich University of the Arts and at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2015, she has been a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. Solomon "Sol" LeWitt (September 9, 1928 – April 8, 2007) was an American artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and "structures" (a term he preferred instead of "sculptures") but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965. Hans Haacke
Hans Haacke (born August 12, 1936) is a German-born artist who lives and works in New York City. Haacke is considered a "leading exponent" of Institutional Critique. Early life Haacke was born in Cologne, Germany. He studied at the '' Staatliche Werkakademie'' in Kassel, Germany, from 1956 to 1960. In 1959, Haacke was hired to assist with the second documenta, working as a guard and tour guide. He was a student of Stanley William Hayter, a well-known and influential English printmaker, draftsman, and painter. Ian Hamilton Finlay
Ian Hamilton Finlay, CBE (28 October 1925 – 27 March 2006) was a Scottish poet, writer, artist and gardener. Life Finlay was born in Nassau, Bahamas, to James Hamilton Finlay and his wife, Annie Pettigrew, both of Scots descent. He was educated at Dollar Academy in Clackmannanshire and later at Glasgow School of Art. At the age of 13, with the outbreak of the Second World War, he was evacuated to family in the countryside. In 1942, he joined the British Army. Finlay was married twice and had two children, Alec and Ailie. He died in Edinburgh. He is buried alone in Abercorn Churchyard in West Lothian. The grave lies in the extreme south-east corner of the churchyard. The gravestone refers to his parents and sister.
