Andreas Gryphius Prize
The Andreas-Gryphius Prize is a prestigious literary prize in Germany, named after the German poet Andreas Gryphius (1616–1664). Reiner Kunze
Reiner Kunze (born 16 August 1933 in Oelsnitz, Erzgebirge, Saxony) is a German writer and GDR dissident. He studied media and journalism at the University of Leipzig. In 1968, he left the GDR state party SED following the communist Warsaw Pact countries invasion of Czechoslovakia in response to the Prague Spring. He had to publish his work under various pseudonyms. In 1976, his most famous book ''The Lovely Years'', which contained critical insights into the life, and the policies behind the Iron Curtain, was published in West Germany to great acclaim. In 1977, the GDR regime expatriated him, and he moved to West Germany (FRG). He now lives near Passau in Bavaria. His writings consists mostly of poetry, though he wrote prose as well, including essays. He is also a translator of Czech poetry and prose. Tamara Ehlert
Tamara Ehlert, aka Tamara Traumann (28 December 1921 – 8 September 2008) was a German writer and lyricist. She was born in Königsberg, and trained in theatre and dance. During the Second World War she worked as a telephone and radio operator. She worked as an interpreter for the British occupation government after the war. From 1951 onwards, she was employed by the Bayerischer Rundfunk. Her first publication was in the ''Königsberger Tageblatt'' in 1938, and after 1945 her poems and short stories were regularly in print. She died in Munich, aged 86. Karin Struck
Karin Struck (14 May 1947, Groß Kiesow – 6 February 2006) was a German author. She won the Rauris Literature Prize and the Andreas Gryphius Prize. She had generally been seen as a writer of women's literature and to the Left. However, in 1991 and 1992 she expressed her opposition to abortion and regret at having had one. She has been described by one feminist source as "one of the most outspoken female writers who openly opposes abortion." In 1996 she converted to the Roman Catholic Church. Frank Thiess
Frank Thiess (13 March 1890 – 22 December 1977) was a German writer. Biography Born in Eluisenstein (now Ogre Municipality), Kreis Riga, Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire (now Latvia), Thiess grew up in Berlin. He worked as a journalist for four years until he was enlisted into the Germany army in World War I. Discharged after a few months because of a heart condition, he returned to Berlin and journalism. Within a few years, however. he decided to devote himself full-time to writing. His early novels were focussed on contemporary subjects — Time magazine once called him "the hot trumpet in Germany's jazz age." He married Florence Losey, an American singer. From the 1930s on, he concentrated on historical novels. Peter Huchel
Peter Huchel (April 3, 1903 – April 30, 1981), born Hellmut Huchel, was a German poet and editor. Life Huchel was born in Lichterfelde (now part of Berlin). From 1923 to 1926, Huchel studied literature and philosophy in Berlin, Freiburg and Vienna. Between 1927 and 1930, he travelled to France, Romania, Hungary and Turkey. In 1930, he changed his first name to Peter and befriended Ernst Bloch, Alfred Kantorowicz and Fritz Sternberg. His early poems, published from 1931 to 1936, are strongly marked by the atmosphere and landscape of Brandenburg. In 1934, Huchel married Dora Lassel. The couple would divorce in 1946 and Huchel would marry Monica Rosental in 1953. Between 1934 and 1940, Huchel wrote plays for German radio. During the Second World War, he served as a soldier until he was taken prisoner by the Russians in 1945. Hans-Jürgen Heise (6 July 1930 - 13 November 2013) was a German author and poet. Biography Heise was born Hans-Jürgen Scheller in Bublitz, Pomerania, Weimar Germany (modern Bobolice, Poland). Gertrud Fussenegger
Gertrud Fussenegger (8 May 1912 – 19 March 2009) was an Austrian writer and a prolific author, especially of historical novels. Many commentators felt that her reputation never entirely escaped from the shadow cast by her enthusiasm, as a young woman, for National Socialism. Ilse Tielsch (born Ilse Felzmann 20 March 1929 – 21 February 2023) was an Austrian writer. Life Ilse Tielsch was born on 20 March 1929 in Hustopeče, Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of Fritz Felzmann (1895–1980), a doctor, writer and musicologist. She grew up in Hustopeče and attended high school in Mikulov.
