Andreas ( or ; gv, Skeerey Andreas) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the north of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) in the sheading of Ayre. The main settlement in the parish in the village of Andreas, which is also known as Kirk Andreas. History There are several ancient monuments and sites located in the parish of Andreas. Ballavarry Burial Mound is a Bronze Age burial mound found a short distance outside of the village of Andreas. Knock y Doonee is a significant historical and archaeological site in Andreas. Archaeological excavations on the area have uncovered a bilingual ogham stone in Latin and Ogham; a Christian keeill (a small chapel); a Christian carved stone cross; and a Viking Age boat burial. Andreas or ''Kirk Andreas'' ( glv, Andreas) is a village on the Isle of Man, lying in the north of the island, 5 km from the island's second town, Ramsey. There is a large, and nowadays little used, airfield in the vicinity. Location Andreas lies at an altitude of about 20 metres, in the centre of the island's northern plain, in the parish of Andreas, which takes in part of the sandy lands known as the Curragh, and to the north contains low, rounded hills, lying between Port Cranstal and Blue Head. It is further within the sheading of Ayre. A now little-used RAF airfield is about 1 km to the east of the village. History Both the village and the parish take their name from Saint Andrew. It is believed to be a translation of a Latin work, which is originally derived from the Greek story '' The Acts of Andrew and Matthew in the City of Anthropophagi'', dated around the 4th century. However, the author of ''Andreas'' added the aspect of the Germanic hero to the Greek story to create the poem ''Andreas'', where St. Andrew is depicted as an Old English warrior, fighting against evil forces.
